We do this for our city’s residents, workers, visitors, and businesses. Our work helps deliver Bristol’s sustainability targets in partnership with the council.

Bristol Waste’s commercial operation, where we serve businesses and organisations across the region, is also growing.

Our ambition is to provide good quality, value for money services, and we continue to deliver a social value impact worth more than £20 million every year.

We want people who share our values and want to work with us to drive our business forward.

Purpose of the role

To lead and support the day-to-day operations of the HGV fleet workshop while actively contributing to vehicle maintenance and repair. This hybrid role combines hands‑on technical expertise with supervisory responsibilities, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant service delivery.

The Workshop Supervisor plays a key role in maximising fleet availability, driving workshop performance, and fostering a collaborative, safety‑focused team culture.

Technical Responsibilities (~50%)
  • Perform scheduled PMI’s, servicing and reactive repairs on HGVs.
  • Ensure all work complies with manufacturer specifications and DVSA standards.
  • Use diagnostic equipment and manual techniques to identify mechanical and electrical faults.
  • Accurately record fault codes and repair actions.
  • Maintain vehicles to meet MOT and roadworthiness standards.
  • Adhere to health and safety regulations, including PPE use and safe working practices.
  • Complete job cards, service sheets, and defect reports accurately and on time.
  • Report recurring faults or safety concerns to supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean and organised work area.
  • Use tools and equipment responsibly and report defects or shortages.
  • Vehicles to be moved and parked in a safe manner.
  • Carry out quality control (QC) checks as required.
  • Attend breakdowns as required, both roadside and at other sites.
Supervisory Responsibilities (~50%)
  • Lead, motivate, and support workshop colleagues including technicians and apprentices.
  • Allocate work effectively to ensure optimal productivity and turnaround times.
  • Monitor workshop performance against KPIs including fleet availability, job completion, and first‑time fix rates.
  • Liaise with operations to prioritise repairs and minimise downtime.
  • Working together with the Workshop Manager and Workshop Supervisor to implement process improvements and ensure effective shift handover.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with SHEQ standards.
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions are taken.
  • Line management of the HGV Technicians and other workshop colleagues.
  • Support training and development of workshop colleagues, including apprenticeships and technical upskilling.
  • Manage attendance, conduct, and capability issues in line with company policy.
  • Checking and signing off vehicle inspection sheets to ensure compliance.
Essential Requirements for the Role
  • NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (or equivalent).
  • UK Driving License.
  • HGV Licence (Class 1 or 2) – desirable for road testing vehicles and vehicle manoeuvring.
  • Vehicle Systems Expertise: Diesel engines, transmissions, braking systems, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
  • Diagnostics: Use of diagnostic tools and software for fault identification.
  • Regulatory Standards: DVSA regulations, MOT requirements, Operator Licence compliance.
  • Health & Safety: Workshop safety protocols, COSHH regulations, and risk assessments.
  • Hands‑On Repairs: Proven experience in servicing and maintaining HGVs.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Experience with scheduled servicing and inspections.
  • Workshop Operations: Familiarity with job cards, parts ordering, and workshop coordination.
  • Supervisory Experience: Experience leading a team in a fleet or workshop environment.
  • Annual leave package of 25 days plus 8 bank holidays.
  • Employer contribution of 5% into the company pension scheme.
  • Support for Mental Health, including a BUPA Employee Assistance Programme that provides support covering Mental Health, Financial and Family related topics. We also have Mental Health First Aiders across the business.
  • Support for your Physical Health with our BUPA Health Cash Plan (we cover the cost of coverage for you), Cycle to Work scheme and an onsite Physiotherapist. All are free for our colleagues.
  • All colleagues receive free access to our Reward Gateway discount scheme, helping you make your money go further with savings at over 900 retailers. It’s one of the ways we support smart spending and everyday wellbeing.
