A community-focused organization based in Southampton is looking for a Keyboarding Volunteer. This part-time role involves digitizing printed translations to make them accessible, including creating Braille versions for visually impaired individuals. No specific skills are necessary; flexibility in working hours and training provided. Join us in enabling people to access important texts easily.
Join to apply for the Keyboarding Volunteer role at MissionAssist.
About The Aims
Volunteers working on their own home computers are reproducing translations which only exist in printed form. That may be because the original translation project was before the digital age, or because older computer copies have been lost. The aim is to have digitised text which is then available for mobile phones, earlier translations can be revised and unfinished projects completed, and Braille versions can be produced for visually impaired people.
About You
You don’t need to be a linguist, a typist, or a computer expert. You don’t need to learn another language, or even leave your own home. There are no set hours – there is flexibility and some volunteers do a few hours a week, while others do more when they have the time available. MissionAssist provides training, and software so that a standard computer keyboard can be used to produce the characters and accents for typing up various languages. (Note that a smart phone or tablet is not a suitable device for this task.)
The motivation
MissionAssist volunteer Kay says, "I want to enable as many people as possible to access the Bible. Keyboarding is something I am able to do even though I have ill health."
Your next steps
There’s a Keyboarding Taster available so that you can see if you would like to join the Bible Digitisation Project.
To find out more, visit the MissionAssist website page about Keyboarding, then complete the Volunteer form.
