Job description

Appointment Basis: 12 Month Fixed Term Contract

Closing date: 4th January 2026

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80 000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Could you be our Mechanical Design Engineer on an initial 1 year fixed term contract at Alstom delivering innovative solutions within the rail sector?

Your future role

The role involves working as part of a dedicated engineering team to deliver high-quality mechanical designs for a range of electronic systems. You will ensure compliance with project-specific requirements and industry standards, while driving innovation and precision. This position requires adherence to agreed timescales and cost parameters, delivering designs that meet performance, reliability, and European Union (EU) regulatory expectations.

We’ll look to you for:
  • Designing mechanical systems in line with project specifications and quality standards.
  • Delivering cost-efficient embedded designs within budget constraints.
  • Adopting and continuously improving innovative design practices and best standards.
  • Ensuring full compliance with design, quality, and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations.
  • Reporting any Quality, HSE, or Human Resources (HR) issues promptly to the Engineering Manager.
  • Translating concepts into detailed manufacturing drawings and complete three-dimensional (3D) files for Line Replaceable Units (LRUs).
  • Managing technical documentation, including creation of Bills of Materials (BoMs), writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and efficient use of Product Data Management (PDM) and Global System Integration (GSI) systems.
  • Supporting prototype development, operating three-dimensional (3D) printers, and assisting with Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design mechanical constraints.
  • Providing production support and general administrative tasks as required.
  • Applying change control and version control processes effectively.
All about you

We value passion and attitude over experience. That’s why we don’t expect you to have every single skill. Instead, here are some that will help you succeed and grow in this role:

  • Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven mechanical design experience using relevant Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and three-dimensional (3D) tools (e.g., DraftSight, AutoCAD, CATIA).
  • Knowledge of rail industry standards is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with test procedures, methods, and documentation control systems is advantagous.
  • Strong technical ability with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Logical thinker with problem-solving capabilities.
  • Highly disciplined, self-motivated, and a team player.
  • Effective communicator at all levels with a strong customer focus.
  • Ability to deliver projects on time, within cost constraints, and to quality standards.
Things you’ll enjoy

Join us on a life-long transformative journey – the rail industry is here to stay, so you can grow and develop new skills and experiences throughout your career. You’ll also:

  • Enjoy stability, challenges and a long-term career free from boring daily routines
  • Collaborate with transverse teams and helpful colleagues
  • Contribute to innovative projects
  • Utilise our agile working environment
  • Steer your career in whatever direction you choose across functions and countries
  • Benefit from our investment in your development, through award-winning learning
  • Benefit from a fair and dynamic reward package that recognises your performance and potential, plus comprehensive and competitive benefits (pension, life ins., medical)
  • Up to 52 weeks full maternity and adoption pay
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, with the opportunity to buy or sell holidays
  • Option to enjoy a brand new electric or hybrid vehicle with our salary sacrifice scheme
  • A wide range of flexible benefits that you can tailor to suit your lifestyle

You don’t need to be a train enthusiast to thrive with us. We guarantee that when you step onto one of our trains with your friends or family, you’ll be proud. If you’re up for the challenge, we’d love to hear from you!
