About British Cycling

In 2027 the UK will host the GrandDepart of both the Tour De France and the Tour De France Femme, Avec Zwift. This will be the first time in history that both races have departed from the same country, outside of France. A landmark social impact programme will also be delivered across the UK, tackling inactivity, improving mental wellbeing, boosting economic growth and supporting communities to thrive.

A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) – GrandDepart GB 2027 – will maintain oversight of the delivery of the events and will manage public funding on behalf of DCMS, Scottish Government, Welsh Government and UK Sport.

The SPV is a Joint Venture between UKEL (a new sports events company) and British Cycling. British Cycling will deliver the operational and business function, social impact and volunteer programmes along with all consumer facing functions, on behalf of partners.

We are now recruiting for a Route Manager to join the growing Operations Team.

The Route Manager will focus on race route planning for selected stages of the Tour de France GrandDepart and or Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift GrandDepart.

The successful candidate will report into the Race Route Lead, who we are recruiting concurrently. We are initially recruiting for one Route Manager however; additional Route Managers will join the team on a staggered basis as we approach the event.

Working with the Race Route Lead, the Route Manager will manage and co‑ordinate stakeholders for the delivery of the event and oversee the planning and delivery of their selected race routes to ensure a fully closed and secure race route is provided for the race.

What will you be doing?

As Route Manager, you will focus on race route planning for agreed stages of the Tour de France GrandDepart 2027 and/or Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift GrandDepart 2027.

This role will support the Race Route Lead to manage and co‑ordinate local authorities, highways authorities and all other key stakeholders primarily responsible for the delivery of a race ready closed road route.

The successful candidate will be a key liaison between GrandDepart GB 2027 and Police forces, other Emergency Services, local Safety Advisory Groups and several key delivery contractors and suppliers for each stage.

What are we looking for?

You will have proven experience of delivering closed‑road route management for large and complex events in the sports events industry (e.g. Cycling, Marathon / road‑running or Triathlon).

Demonstratable experience of working in partnership with Local Authorities, Emergency Services, Transport Authorities and other key stakeholders to secure the necessary road closures and highways amends to deliver a secure race route.

A demonstratable understanding of the requirements (staffing, infrastructure, key contracts) to deliver a fully closed road race route.

You will be a confident leader and project manager, capable of overseeing complex operations, coordinating multiple workstreams, and driving high performance across teams and delivery partners.

With the ability to work under pressure and to tight timescales, you have experience of successfully collaborating to deliver complex projects with multiple partners and stakeholders across public and private sectors.

You are a strong communicator who thrives on building relationships with colleagues and a range of stakeholders.

What will you be doing?
  • Work in detail across all aspects of the event route to ensure a safe closed road racing route is provided.
  • Lead the creation of route management and supervision plans, including road closure marshal allocation and identification of volunteer locations.
  • Work with the key partners to design resource levels needed for route management.
  • Work closely with Emergency and Critical Services to ensure their business‑as‑usual operations are factored into event planning.
  • Design, with others, the scope of requirements for stewarding, barriers and other safety and security provision.
  • Development of route contingency plans working in conjunction with the relevant policing authorities, highways authorities and suppliers across the three days of the event.
  • Update and manage documents and communications that will form part of the wider event management plan for the event weekend.
  • To work in collaboration with the Highways and Transport Team to interlace route management, spectator travel management and wider traffic impact planning.
  • To act as the main point of contact on route matters for local authorities responsible for the routes and stages for which you are working.
  • To work collaboratively with the Operations and Programme teams, supporting delivery partners in their preparations and delivery.
  • To work collaboratively and flexibly across the project providing additional support to other teams and departments as required by the Race Route Lead / Operations Director.
What are the perks?
  • Competitive Salary
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Generous Holidays (25 days + bank holidays)
  • Holiday purchase scheme
  • Life Assurance
  • Pension
