A leading sports organization in the UK is seeking a Route Manager for the Tour de France Grand Depart 2027. This role involves overseeing race route planning and coordination with local authorities and emergency services to ensure a secure race route. Ideal candidates will have proven experience in route management for large events, demonstrate strong communication and project management skills, and work in a hybrid model requiring at least two days per week in the office. Competitive salary of £45,000 plus benefits is offered.

Salary: £45,000 per annum
Contract: Full-time, fixed term until middle of August 2027
Location: Manchester (hybrid) – hybrid working model, minimum 2‑days per week in Manchester office or regional travel as required.
Start Date: Immediate
In 2027 the UK will host the GrandDepart of both the Tour De France and the Tour De France Femme, Avec Zwift. This will be the first time in history that both races have departed from the same country, outside of France. A landmark social impact programme will also be delivered across the UK, tackling inactivity, improving mental wellbeing, boosting economic growth and supporting communities to thrive.
A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) – GrandDepart GB 2027 – will maintain oversight of the delivery of the events and will manage public funding on behalf of DCMS, Scottish Government, Welsh Government and UK Sport.
The SPV is a Joint Venture between UKEL (a new sports events company) and British Cycling. British Cycling will deliver the operational and business function, social impact and volunteer programmes along with all consumer facing functions, on behalf of partners.
We are now recruiting for a Route Manager to join the growing Operations Team.
The Route Manager will focus on race route planning for selected stages of the Tour de France GrandDepart and or Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift GrandDepart.
The successful candidate will report into the Race Route Lead, who we are recruiting concurrently. We are initially recruiting for one Route Manager however; additional Route Managers will join the team on a staggered basis as we approach the event.
Working with the Race Route Lead, the Route Manager will manage and co‑ordinate stakeholders for the delivery of the event and oversee the planning and delivery of their selected race routes to ensure a fully closed and secure race route is provided for the race.
As Route Manager, you will focus on race route planning for agreed stages of the Tour de France GrandDepart 2027 and/or Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift GrandDepart 2027.
This role will support the Race Route Lead to manage and co‑ordinate local authorities, highways authorities and all other key stakeholders primarily responsible for the delivery of a race ready closed road route.
The successful candidate will be a key liaison between GrandDepart GB 2027 and Police forces, other Emergency Services, local Safety Advisory Groups and several key delivery contractors and suppliers for each stage.
You will have proven experience of delivering closed‑road route management for large and complex events in the sports events industry (e.g. Cycling, Marathon / road‑running or Triathlon).
Demonstratable experience of working in partnership with Local Authorities, Emergency Services, Transport Authorities and other key stakeholders to secure the necessary road closures and highways amends to deliver a secure race route.
A demonstratable understanding of the requirements (staffing, infrastructure, key contracts) to deliver a fully closed road race route.
You will be a confident leader and project manager, capable of overseeing complex operations, coordinating multiple workstreams, and driving high performance across teams and delivery partners.
With the ability to work under pressure and to tight timescales, you have experience of successfully collaborating to deliver complex projects with multiple partners and stakeholders across public and private sectors.
You are a strong communicator who thrives on building relationships with colleagues and a range of stakeholders.
