Job description
Design Coordinator – Wastewater Treatment Projects

Location: Warrington, England, United Kingdom

About Glanua

Glanua is an industry leader in providing innovative and sustainable engineering solutions to design, build, operate and maintain critical water and wastewater infrastructure across Ireland and the UK. We partner with leading utilities such as Uisce Éireann (formerly Irish Water), Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, United Utilities and Affinity Water, delivering projects that support environmental sustainability and decarbonisation.

The role

The Design Coordinator will play a pivotal role in the successful delivery of Glanua’s AMP8 Design and Build Framework with United Utilities. Acting as the primary interface between the project delivery team, design consultants and the client, the role ensures efficient coordination, integration and constructability of civil designs from conception to handover, while maintaining compliance with client specifications, regulator requirements and multi‑disciplinary objectives. The position is based in the Reading region but may require occasional travel to other UK water client sites.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work as part of a project team, supporting one or more projects simultaneously.
  • Assist the Design Manager with drafting work scopes and man‑hour estimates for proposals.
  • Generate and track design deliverables and schedules, ensuring quality and on‑time completion.
  • Prioritise tasks and schedule work for on‑site and off‑site design teams.
  • Conduct meetings, reviews, prepare documentation and assist the Project Manager with contractual communication to owners and subcontractors.
  • Participate in discipline task‑force teams, peer reviews and evaluation of construction methods, applying lessons learned and best practices.
  • Coordinate Requests for Information (RFIs), submittals and shop drawings to support the construction schedule.
  • Facilitate coordination meetings to advance design packages.
  • Monitor scope and prepare change documents while analysing interdisciplinary impacts.
  • Assist with design and construction reviews, obtaining approval of design‑related questions and packages.
  • Provide field and construction guidance to CAD designers, drafters, designers and junior engineers.
  • Identify out‑of‑scope tasks and prepare change orders for owners or contractors.
  • Estimate design and schedule impacts for owner‑directed change orders and contractor requests.
  • Monitor drafting progress for all disciplines on assigned projects.
  • Review designs for constructability, buildability and efficiency, providing optimisation input.
  • Identify value‑engineering opportunities for cost savings and programme efficiencies.
  • Engage with the construction team to ensure designs are practical and minimise construction risk.
  • Ensure civil designs comply with UK Water Industry standards, regulations (CESWI, WIMES), British Standards, Eurocodes and client requirements.
  • Oversee the management and control of design documentation, drawings and specifications.
  • Maintain adherence to company design management procedures and quality assurance processes.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors and regulatory bodies.
  • Communicate design progress, challenges and solutions to all stakeholders.
  • Identify design‑related risks and opportunities, contributing to the project risk register.
  • Implement mitigation strategies to minimise design risks.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Proven experience in a design role within the UK water and wastewater infrastructure sector for a tier‑1 contractor (e.g., clean water, wastewater treatment works, pipelines, pumping stations).
  • Appreciation of the UK water sector regulatory environment.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering principles and design processes relevant to water/wastewater assets.
  • Proficiency in reviewing and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications and technical reports.
  • Strong organisational skills, capable of managing multiple design packages concurrently.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Desirable:

  • Four years of experience in a Design & Build environment.
  • Familiarity with design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D) for review purposes.
  • Knowledge of BIM methodologies and collaborative design platforms, especially Bentley ProjectWise.
  • Experience with NEC contracts, particularly Options A & C.
Personal Attributes
  • Proactive and self‑motivated with strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Detail‑oriented and highly accurate.
  • Resilient and adaptable to changing project demands.
  • Committed to health, safety, and environmental excellence.
What we offer you
  • Opportunity to join an ambitious and growing organisation.
  • Monday‑to‑Friday working week with early finish on Fridays.
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Competitive base salary with annual salary reviews.
  • Company laptop and phone.
  • Access to EAP – 24/7 confidential employee counselling service, free for employees and families.
