Early Careers TSO Ship Structure Assistant Specialist
The role

Technical Support Office- Assistant Specialist

Role Purpose:

We are seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to join our Naval Technical Support Office as an Assistant Specialist in September 2026. This role offers an exceptional opportunity to build practical engineering and assurance skills within the naval and marine sectors, guided by seasoned maritime professionals.

As part of Lloyd’s Register’s Global Naval and Marine Structures Team, you will contribute to projects supporting the design, construction, and life‑cycle management of naval vessels, warships, submarines, and supporting infrastructure. This team provides independent technical assurance and consultancy for both newbuild and operational naval assets, serving defense organisations, shipyards and government clients worldwide.

About the Company:

Lloyd’s Register is a world leader in delivering engineering and assurance services for the marine, naval and offshore industries. We partner with navies, shipbuilders and defence contractors to ensure that vessels are designed, built, operated and maintained to the highest safety, quality and environmental standards.

Our expertise spans naval architecture, structural integrity, hydrodynamics, safety and survivability, propulsion systems and materials technology – helping clients across the global defence and commercial marine sectors ensure performance, resilience and regulatory compliance.

This position may require site visits to shipyards, dry docks, naval bases and onboard vessels, sometimes involving work at height, in confined spaces or over water. The environment may also involve exposure to various marine materials and operational conditions relevant to naval engineering. All necessary safety and technical training will be provided.

What we offer you:

  • A role that starts in September 2026
  • A fixed term contract for 2 years
  • Competitive salary and benefits
  • Health insurance
  • Mentorship from experienced professionals
  • Opportunities for career advancement
  • The opportunity to work for an organisation that has a strong sense of purpose, is values‑driven and helps colleagues to develop professionally and personally through our range of people development programmes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct structural assessments and review design documentation in accordance with defined specifications and scope, considering budget constraints and contractual obligations.
  • Prepare reports, certificates or documents in an agreed format and within specified timelines.
  • Collect, analyse and present data effectively.
  • Establish and maintain technical file systems, as well as manage computer databases, providing administrative support as needed.
  • Communicate customer feedback promptly and effectively.
  • Perform tasks in compliance with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation and industry standards.
  • Propose suggestions to enhance service delivery effectiveness by recommending changes to processes or work scope, aiming to reduce appraisal efforts where feasible.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to uphold a high level of discipline knowledge and awareness.

Required Qualifications:

  • A BEng degree, or equivalent qualification, from a tertiary institution recognised by Lloyd’s Register in a relevant field of engineering.
  • Proficiency in the English language, including adeptness in report writing and preparing technical reports, suitable for the responsibilities of the role.
  • Profound knowledge of structural engineering design principles essential for designing and analysing steel or concrete structures. Familiarity and understanding of offshore structures would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of relevant industry Codes and Standards, references, as well as procedures and practices of classification, certification, verification and validation applicable to respective design appraisal services concerning the ocean economy industries’ areas of operation.
  • Strong desire to learn and develop skills in the marine industry.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office.

You are someone who:

  • Can self‑manage and prioritise tasks towards achieving goals.
  • Has willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Has the desire to learn how to communicate technical ideas in a structured and simple way.
  • Enjoys building relationships with team members and displays a team spirit, particularly in a multicultural environment and ability to work both independently and as part of a team with colleagues in person and around the world.
  • Has perseverance in the face of obstacles and attention to detail.
  • Has a drive and is keen to take accountability and ownership for delivering tasks in a timely manner and of high quality.
  • Demonstrates initiative and proactiveness and has flexibility adjusting your approach when necessary.
  • Acts with integrity, dignity and respect; is seen as a truthful individual; admits mistakes to get support from direct manager as appropriate.
  • Works in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the LR Code of Ethics in IMS01.

Security Clearance:

  • Successful candidates must be able to achieve a UK security clearance.

How to apply:

Interested candidates should submit their CV and a cover letter explaining their interest in this Early Careers role opening in September 2026. For any questions you may contact Careers@lr.org.
