Job description

The School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Cardiovascular Electrophysiology. The School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health is one of eight Schools within the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow. The School is internationally leading in the areas of research, education (and undergraduate and postgraduate level) and has a wide-ranging internationalization, engagement and enterprise portfolio. Research in the School focusses on the areas of cardiac diseases (including but not limited to ischemic heart disease, heart failure, arrhythmias and cardio‑oncology), metabolic diseases (including but not limited to diabetes and obesity) and vascular diseases (including but not limited to hypertension, cerebrovascular disease and kidney disease), supported by a cross‑cutting research theme in cardiovascular data science. The School is proud of its translational research strategy from fundamental and discovery science to experimental medicine, clinical trials and implementation research.

Job Purpose

To develop, lead and sustain research and scholarship of international standard in the subject area of cardiovascular cellular electrophysiology and contribute to the delivery of excellent student experience by delivering, research, teaching, and administration processes to enhance learning and cardiovascular research in the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Pursue and deliver independent research proposals and/or collaborative research projects, project manage research activities, supervise and take responsibility for the research team. Secure external resources to support research individually and/or jointly, as appropriate to the subject area. The specific research area that is the focus of the position is the cellular electrophysiology of the heart, but at the single‑cell and the syncytium level.
  2. Develop an expert reputation in the field by effective dissemination and publishing of research findings in cardiac electrophysiology in leading journals and conferences, and where appropriate undertaking knowledge exchange activities.
  3. Make a substantial contribution to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College. Establish and lead research collaborations with appropriate individuals and groups within the University, including multi‑disciplinary links, and develop external research collaborations both nationally and internationally, to ensure that research activities are at the forefront of the field.
  4. Actively contribute to the effective management and administration of the College/School, assuming responsibility for the management of allocated resources and contributing to the wider organisation of the subject area.
  5. Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.
  6. Develop effective approaches which enhance intellectual understanding and innovation in the field of cellular cardiac electrophysiology and support and enhance course delivery, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.
  7. Ensure an inclusive and evidence‑based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face‑to‑face and potentially online delivery formats such as tutorials, lectures, problem‑based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.
  8. Develop effective working relationships with students and early‑career staff in the subject specialism, providing specialist advice, support and academic leadership. Work in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.
  9. Supervise project work at undergraduate and Masters levels and take forward the supervision and training of postgraduate research students in the area of cardiac electrophysiology.
  10. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
  11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
  12. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing.
Qualifications / Knowledge

Essential:

  • A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in related discipline with a growing reputation for scholarship within the subject area Membership of relevant professional body, where appropriate.
  • A2. Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in the specialist subject of cardiovascular electrophysiology to develop research and teaching methodologies/learning support.
  • A3. Established reputation in research and/or teaching, including an international research profile in the subject area of cellular cardiac electrophysiology.
Skills

Essential:

  • C1. Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding and develop early‑career academic colleagues in the area of cardiac electrophysiology.
  • C2. Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School/Service.
  • C3. Have an established track record of research outputs and of applying for, and securing, external research funding compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives in the subject area of cardiac electrophysiology.
Experience

Essential:

  • E1. Experience and achievement in the field of cardiac electrophysiology reflected in an expanding personal academic portfolio.
  • E2. Experience of developing and demonstrating teaching and/or research methods and devising models, approaches, techniques, critiques and methods in the field of cardiovascular research.
  • E3. Track record of continuous engagement with current practice and developing knowledge in the area of cellular cardiac electrophysiology.
  • E4. Demonstrated commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.
  • E5. Proven commitment to supporting the career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.
College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8, £50,253 - £58,225 per annum.

This post is full time and has funding for up to 2 years.
