Job description

At Octopus Energy Generation (OEGEN), we're passionate about powering a sustainable future. As pioneers in the renewable energy space, we don’t just invest in utility-scale projects; we invest in people, communities, and a greener tomorrow.

Since stepping into the renewables arena in 2010, we've made waves – becoming a top investor in onshore wind across mainland Europe and the largest backer of solar power in Europe. Today, we proudly manage over £7bn in renewable energy assets worldwide.

Our portfolio includes over three hundred major energy-generating companies, from wind farms to solar power plants, with exciting new ventures in energy storage, e-fuels and beyond. As we continue to grow, we're looking for passionate individuals to join our diverse and dedicated team, helping us drive the future of renewable energy forward.

Whilst we maintain a degree of flexibility, this position requires an average of 3 days in the office per week in London.

Team Overview

The Development Portfolio Management Team at OEGEN is in charge of delivering our development investments and works hand in hand with developers to deliver on the investment cases in changing commercial and market dynamics.

The Development Associate Director is pivotal in leading OEGEN's commercial relationships with approximately 6-8 development partners under development agreements, joint ventures or equity investments in Europe. The portfolio spans different maturity stages (from early stage land to ready to build) and five countries.

Your mission will be to make these investments a huge success through their development journey and until exits.

You will lead all commercial, development and legal decisions on this portfolio, will drive their value maximisation, exit strategy and sale processes. You will lead a team of commercial and development managers that will be fully in charge of this development portfolio. You are likely to become a board director on joint ventures and project companies.

We are looking for someone who is very commercially minded, understands renewables development, loves data and communicates clearly with the team and senior stakeholders. The fund managers will rely on you to support them in decision making and value creation for portfolio companies.

What you'll do
Commercial Management
  • Be in charge of strategic oversight and direct management of approximately 6-8 renewable energy developers and development pipelines, working closely with developers to ensure delivery of investment objectives and progress of projects through development milestones to ready to build.
  • Together with the team, be the first point of contact with each developer, manage day‑to‑day coordination and communication with developers and lead operational reviews of pipelines.
  • Lead on value enhancement and maximisation of each development project including time of exit, sale preparation, revenue contracting, last mile development and other activities ensuring the best returns to investors on exit.
  • Monitor valuation and financial performance of investments to optimise returns and conduct regular assessments of investment and overall portfolio performance against objectives.
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to the performance of the portfolio, enhancing investment resilience and performance.
Governance Oversight
  • Responsible for implementing, maintaining and enhancing governance frameworks to ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with senior management and shareholders of portfolio companies and partners to ensure that governance practices are well‑managed and operational processes are optimised.
  • Be an active member of operational committees and a board member on joint ventures and portfolio companies.
Team Leadership and Support
  • You will be responsible for leading and motivating a team dedicated to managing the development portfolio, fostering a culture of empowerment and continuous improvement.
  • You will work closely with OEGEN Fund Managers to deliver the overarching fund objectives.
  • You will be responsible for reporting against the development and investment KPIs internally and to the investors.
What you'll need
  • Experience managing and driving strategic initiatives for a portfolio of businesses/developers with renewable assets
  • Strong regulatory, governance, and compliance knowledge, with experience in managing complex operations across various geographical locations.
  • Experience in driving value enhancement and maximisation strategies and projects’ exits.
  • Exceptional commercial acumen with a proven track record in investment portfolio management or asset management.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, adept at engaging and influencing a diverse stakeholder group.
  • Proficient in financial modelling, project management, data and reporting.
