Job description
Junior Lead Coach (Girls)

Tulse Hill & Dulwich HC, Dulwich (SE London)

Tulse Hill & Dulwich (THD) Hockey Club are looking to recruit enthusiastic, inspiring and skilled coaches to join our junior section.

THD is a large club based in South East London with over 850 active members. We have a thriving junior section which ranges from ages 6-18, THD Phoenix, along with 16 adult teams and 4 vets teams. We are based in Dulwich and play our hockey at Dulwich College, James Allen's Girls School and Alleyn's School.

In 2024, THD Phoenix was recognised by England Hockey and was shortlisted for their annual awards in the Diversity and Inclusion Champion category. THD Phoenix provides free hockey to state school children in Primary Schools.

The club is currently working towards the nationally‑recognised, cross‑sport accreditation Club Mark in collaboration with England Hockey.

Our Junior section is led by the Director of Junior Hockey. We are looking for Junior Coaches to lead girls’ sections. Successful candidates will oversee the annual coaching programme for one or more age groups, liaise with the Coach Coordinator and Group Captain(s) regarding coach and volunteer support/allocations and manage weekly team selections. Weekly availability for our Sunday training/fixtures programme is essential, and midweek sessions (Thursday 6‑7) would be desirable.

Outlined below in this job description are the desired credentials of the ‘ideal’ candidates. However, we are looking to broaden the pool of role models for our young players. So, for female coaches (or aspiring female coaches) or those from minority backgrounds, if you are potentially interested in joining our coaching team but do not fully meet the criteria for the role(s), we would still love to hear from you and consider your application. It is worth highlighting that the club offers funding for coaching qualifications and relevant training.

These positions could be combined with other coaching roles within the club (junior/senior). Further opportunities to be discussed during the application process.

Role:

  • Girls Junior Coach

Reporting To:

Director of Junior Hockey

Hours:

Minimum 1.5 hours (ideally 3 hours) on pitch every Sunday throughout the season, plus some off‑pitch management time. Midweek hours with the age group are desirable. (However, additional Sunday/midweek coaching hours would be available if desired, working with other age/gender groups, whether that be in a lead coach or assistant coach capacity.)

Coaching Rate:

To be negotiated with the club, dependent on knowledge, experience and linked to coaching qualifications.

Responsibilities:

To oversee the coaching programme and manage the coaches/volunteers for the age group(s).

Culture and environment: To enhance consistency, raise standards and build strong pathways across the age group. To be familiar with and to promote England Hockey’s healthy talent development principles. Responsible for ensuring that all sessions are run safely and reporting incidents, injuries and/or welfare concerns.

Planning and delivery:

To plan and deliver high‑quality sessions throughout the season, which demonstrate a golden thread of player development.

Fixtures:

Provide pitch‑side coaching for regular fixtures. Attend and run internal/external mini tournaments for the age group.

Selection:

Responsible for weekly team selections for the age group.

Player Pathway:

To support the Head Coach for the section in providing EH Player Pathway outfield player nominations to the Director of Hockey in a timely manner, as and when required, and to provide regular feedback regarding player development and stretch/support requirements.

Qualifications:

  • EH Coach Award / Level 2 qualified (or equivalent)
  • Valid Safeguarding & Protecting Children certificate (UK Coaching)
  • DBS enhanced check (must be completed before the appointment can be confirmed)
  • Right to live and work in the UK

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Experience of coaching players, planning and leading sessions in a junior section.
  • Experience of working in a junior performance environment (desirable).
  • Familiar with England Hockey’s Future Talent Strategy and Talent
