Clinical Research Fellow in Cardiology (Electrophysiology and Devices)

The closing date is 01 January 2026

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior clinical research fellow post within the Department of Cardiology at Glenfield Hospital to undertake translational research in cardiac electrophysiology. The research projects will encompass the remits of arrhythmia mechanism, novel ablation methodology and technology. The appointed fellow will be expected to work towards an MD/PhD registered at the University of Leicester.

Main duties of the job

Candidates are expected to have had substantial training in general cardiology and ideally be trainees in cardiac electrophysiology. Basic experience in diagnostic electrophysiology is required and a clear motivation to develop high-level electrophysiology and/or devices skills should be demonstrable.

The appointed candidate will be expected to participate in 1-2 outpatient clinics/week within the electrophysiology service. Access to catheter lab and training in complex cardiac electrophysiology is negotiable depending on candidate's level of cardiology training.

This is a full-time research post funded for 12 months with the potential for extension to 24 months depending on candidate's performance. The appointed candidate will receive support from both academic and clinical supervisors. The candidate is expected to work independently but also collaboratively with cardiac physiologists, heart rhythm nurses, and cardiology registrars.

About us

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:

  • high-quality care for all
  • being a great place to work
  • partnerships for impact
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:

  • we are compassionate
  • we are proud
  • we are inclusive
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

Job responsibilities

There is strong research interest in Sudden Death developing novel predictive tools; and Atrial Fibrillation including mechanistic studies involving signal processing, artificial intelligence and engineering approaches as well as leading multicentre international clinical trials. This post is funded to conduct research on various ablation strategies of AF and VT. The applicant will be encouraged to develop own research ideas, to support other potential ongoing electrophysiology trials, and to disseminate research findings through academic publications and conference presentations. Duration of the post is 2 years, can be extended up to 3 years, depending on study progress.

Duties of the post.

It is anticipated that the fellow will work under the direct supervision of consultant cardiac electrophysiologists in the department with direct supervision of Dr Shui Hao Chin who is responsible for VT ablation program in the trust. Working and training with other EP and devices consultants will be accessible. It is expected that the successful applicant will be exposed to some EP interventions as well as comprehensive management of patients with arrhythmic conditions in out-patient and in-patient settings. The majority of the week will be spent in research activity. There will be no regular ward commitment. The fellow will be expected to do 1-2 out-patient clinics per week. The opportunity to join the registrar on-call rota may be available, but is not mandatory.
