Job description

City of York Council is seeking to appoint a Programme Support Officer to our Public Health team, who will be central part of the Health Trainer service.

The Health Trainer service is responsible for delivering the city’s Stop Smoking Service and one‑to‑one lifestyle advice to citizens of York. The service works with individuals to tackle inequalities in health and support people to live healthy and independent lives.

The role is a central part of the service, offering the front door for citizens who have been referred by their healthcare professional or who have contacted us directly. You will also be supporting the team of Health Trainers and the Programme Manager in the effective delivery of the service. This will include organising and booking appointments, ordering supplies and equipment, posting letters and nicotine replacement therapy, raising purchase orders and meeting administration.

You will have daily contact with a wide range of people, from citizens, health and care professionals and service staff, through to suppliers, colleagues across the council and those working in different organisations.

We’re looking for someone who is confident on the telephone, using ICT systems (MS Office, patient record systems, financial management systems, virtual appointment software) and face‑to‑face with colleagues. Full training in specific system will be provided if required.

If you are up for the challenge to join our team, bring new ideas and creativity and make a difference to the lives of people in York then we want to hear from you!

This post is not suitable as a job share opportunity.

As this role is public facing, applicants will need to demonstrate, at interview, their competency to converse and provide advice and guidance to members of the public, in spoken English to CEFR level C2: Can express themselves spontaneously at length with a natural conversational flow, avoiding or backtracking around any difficulty so smoothly that the person with whom they are conversing is hardly aware of it.

Hybrid working arrangements are available for this role. Each role at CYC is different and your working arrangements will be determined based on the requirements of the role and in collaboration with you and your needs as part of the recruitment process. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team.

The Council is committed to investing in the talent and wellbeing of our staff and can offer a generous annual leave allowance, access to the Local Government Pension Scheme, comprehensive Health & Wellbeing initiatives and a reward package which recognises your contribution. We can offer flexible working practices, community engagement and volunteer activities and, as part of our commitment to you, promote continuous Learning & Development. In addition we also offer a growing range of discounts, rewards and savings.

For further information or an informal discussion please contact Glyn Newberry (Public Health Manager at glyn.newberry@york.gov.uk or on 07786 701258).
