An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Community Protection team and play a crucial role in our commitment to enhance community safety and reduce environmental crimes.

Our Community Protection Officers are at the forefront of safeguarding our neighbourhoods by addressing environmental crime and tackling antisocial behaviour in public spaces throughout the borough. The team are responsible for enforcing relevant antisocial behaviour and environmental protection legislation, to tackle the issues affecting those that live, work in, or visit Crawley.

In this role, you will tackle complex community issues, using specialised crime prevention and investigative techniques to address community concerns and you will work is close partnership with other enforcement professionals and agencies to achieve our joint objectives.

As leaders in problem-solving and crime prevention, your insights will shape strategies to combat crime and disorder, fostering safer and more vibrant public spaces. We seek individuals driven by a passion for community safety and social justice as these qualities are fundamental to the team’s ethos and purpose.

Your responsibilities will include producing thorough reports and recommendations and building high quality cases that may result in prosecution. Therefore, impeccable attention to detail and exceptional written and verbal communication skills are crucial to this role.

Operating under a trauma-informed framework, our Community Protection team adopts a compassionate approach to enforcement, prioritising individual well-being while addressing persistent antisocial behaviour and crime.

Expect to conduct intelligence-led patrols across key borough locations, involving outdoor, foot-based work in all weather conditions. This will require frequent walking and physical activity, where physical fitness and readiness for frontline duties are paramount.

Crawley is a great place to work, with a thriving business district and excellent transport connections including nearby Gatwick Airport. We are based in our modern Town Hall which opened in 2023 and is located a short walk from the town centre and railway station.

Additional information

You will work an average of 37 hours per week to include rostered evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays including early starts and late finishes (This is a 365-day service).

A full current UK driving licence is essential as this position requires the postholder to drive vehicles as part of their duties.

The post holder will be required to undertake a standard DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Scheme) and be successfully accepted in the Sussex Police accreditation scheme.

This role involves a level of risk that needs to be managed by formal risk assessments and dynamic risk assessments at all times.

The post holder will be required to use a body worn video camera in line with our policies.

Lone working is a requirement of the job role.

The post holder will be required to work outside in all weather conditions.

There are four training days to be attended each year and notice will be given of such days and all staff are required to attend and an alternative day off will be given.
