Job description
DESIGN ENGINEER

ITP Aero UK are recruiting for a Design Engineer or Senior Design Engineer to join our team in Hucknall, United Kingdom. This role is full-time (37 hours per week).

What is the objective of this role and what does it consist of?

The aviation industry is living a new dawn as new jet engine architectures are being developed and the industry moves towards a greener future and zero carbon propulsion. An exciting opportunity for a Design Engineer has arisen within the expanding ITP Aero UK Aerostructures Engineering team. The Aerostructures Team engineers a vast range of components for Civil Large and Business Aviation jet Engines.

As a Component Design Engineer you will create engineering solutions that satisfy functional and physical requirements symptomatic of Product System and Sub‑System level environments. Crucially, the engineered solutions must exhibit robustness for manufacturing capability. You will follow the Design of such components through the entire lifecycle, from concept design to in‑service support. You will have the opportunity to operate across three different areas: LNP (New Product introduction), Industrialisation and R&T.

The Component Design Engineer is responsible for the on‑time delivery and quality of designed components against programme milestones i.e. the required documentation, models and definitions that meet system level and sub‑system requirements. The Component Design Engineer will work within IPTs (Integrated Project Teams) and operate in accordance with the ITP Aero UK policies and processes. The Component Design Engineer actively contributes to the integration of the technical activities and enables lifecycle profitability through the Supply Chain.

Key Accountabilities will include:
  • Understanding of customer needs and requirements.
  • Deliver effective design solutions for components and complex assemblies in consideration of safety, manufacturing capability, product physical and functional robustness. Design solutions should also consider Unit Cost, Lifecycle Cost, Weight, Maintainability and Repair.
  • Deliver definition to appropriate stakeholder groups’ requirements e.g. manufacturing (domestic/external), project customers, air framers and partners and analysis teams in accordance with associated agreed policies.
  • Elimination of Non‑Conformance through Zero Defects activities and Delivery of Producibility tasks within a Manufacturing Environment. This will be through analysing customer and programme requirements, incorporation of manufacturing and measurement process capability into the design solution and associated manufacturing definition. Establish and adoption of lean principles like standardisation/house styles to achieve solutions and producible components in a repeatable fashion. Improvements to design methods, rules and tools to achieve robustness. Application of Robust Design, Systems Engineering, Risk Management (xFMEA) and Design in Context to ensure right first time is achieved.
  • Quality Assurance through checking of design documents, models, drawings in accordance with the appropriate standards and technical requirements and proactive Zero Defects approach.
  • Create technical documents compliant to the applicable processes.
  • Enable through life Supply Chain Design and Lifecycle profitability for mature product fleets through the application of various mechanisms i.e. non‑conformance management, drawing alteration requests, repair instructions, engine manual limits and technical variants.
  • Plan, manage and execute external design packages via Purchase Orders placed on managed service providers.
  • Compilation of BOMs (Bill of Materials) and support of the configuration process.
  • Contribute to the sub‑system and system integration process with the appropriate use of Systems Engineering and Robust Design tools to ensure the technical attributes of the Sub‑system design meet the agreed requirements.
  • Deliver innovative Design Concepts and develop new technologies while working on exciting R&T programs.
What profile are we looking for?
  • Proficient use of a CAD package, ideally Siemens NX, and Teamcentre, is beneficial. On the job and formal training will be provided.
  • Strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and understands cross discipline engineering concepts which may include but are not limited to thermal and mechanical analysis, manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, cost engineering and product definition.
  • Ability to plan engineering tasks effectively that are part of complex projects involving several departments.
  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's in Engineering or proof of relevant technical experience, vision and a passion to succeed.
  • An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems and make balanced decisions across technical and business parameters is a prerequisite.
  • Knowledge and experience of product integrity / liability and certification frameworks.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body appropriate is beneficial but not essential.
  • Good communication and presentation skills at all levels of the organisation is required.
  • Fluency in English is a requirement for this position.
  • Candidates with experience in Design, Definition, Stress Analysis and Design integration will be considered.
