Job Title: Proofreader

Salary: £26,600-£32,600 per annum

Location: UK Home-based – Must be able to travel to Cambridge when required

Contract: Full-time, 18-month fixed term

Weekly Hours: 35

We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

This is an opportunity to join the proofreading team for an exam board. The team provides a high-quality proofreading service for question paper material. The required standard is that the materials are 100% error-free.

This is an in-house position, which can be performed remotely. There will be occasions when you will be required to travel to the Cambridge office.

We are a small, friendly team, and we provide a formal, structured induction.

About The Role

You will proofread question paper materials in all subjects and at all qualification levels to make sure they are free from errors and follow the agreed style.

Responsibilities
  • Proofreading question paper materials to make sure they are free of grammar, spelling, typographical, layout and formatting errors.
  • Contributing to the continual improvement of team processes and procedures.
  • Helping keep our style guide up to date.
  • Helping reply to queries on style from our internal customers.

Flexible working requests will be considered from the first day of employment, including other work arrangements, should you require adjustments due to a disability or long-term health condition.

About You
  • A highly accurate and experienced proofreader. The role is not suitable for entry-level proofreaders and it is not available as a freelance position.
  • Used to working with a large and complex style guide and detailed checklists.
  • Ideally familiar with exam board materials.
  • Used to spending the majority of your time proofreading. The role does not include editing materials.
  • A quick learner.
More About You
  • An excellent understanding of English grammar and plain English.
  • Grade A/B GCSE English language and education to degree level, or equivalent.
  • Evidence of proofreading training either via a recognised qualification or by being trained on the job by an experienced proofreader.
  • A methodical and meticulous way of working.
  • The ability to sustain accuracy and attention to detail when proofreading similar formats repeatedly.
  • Experience of working to agreed processes and procedures, and with confidential material.
  • Excellent communication skills verbally and in writing.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • A commitment to continual improvement.
In your letter of application, please include details about:
  • Your proofreading training, including Intermediate or higher-level membership of the CIEP.
  • The types of complex documents you have proofread, including any exam board materials, and any areas of specialist proofreading knowledge.
  • Your experience of working with a large and complex style guide and detailed checklists.

We are a Disability Confident (DC) employer that is committed to equality and inclusion, ensuring our recruitment process is accessible to all. The DC scheme's Offer of an Interview commitment applies to applicants who opt in, and disclose a disability or a long-term health condition, and best meet the minimum criteria for the role. In instances where interviewing all qualifying candidates is not practicable, we prioritise those who best meet the minimum criteria, as we would for applicants who do not have a disability or long-term health condition.

Please note, Cambridge University Press & Assessment is unable to sponsor this role under the Skilled Worker Visa route as it does not meet the minimum skill requirements.
Rewards And Benefits

We will support you to be at your best in work and to live well outside of it. In addition to competitive salaries, we offer a world-class, flexible rewards package, featuring family-friendly and planet-friendly benefits including:

  • 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Private medical and Permanent Health Insurance
  • Discretionary annual bonus
  • Group personal pension scheme
