A government agency in Newport is looking for Correctional Officers to ensure safety and manage inmate behavior in a structured environment. Overview Corrections professionals in Vermont work in a system that believes in the basics of human change. Intensive training prepares entry level Correctional Officers for a career that blends security work, human services, and leadership opportunities. This work is rewarding on many levels and draws on a wide range of skills. Training The start of your career in Corrections begins with a week at the correctional facility observing the duties and role of a correctional officer. Next, the six weeks of instruction are at the Vermont Correctional Academy, where you will learn the core skill set of a corrections professional. After graduation, you will participate in eighty hours of onsite training supervised by staff at your new facility.
Shift Schedule The position is based on your availability. Positions vary and we run on a 2-shift schedule, 6am - 6pm and 6pm - 6am. Shifts and schedules are assigned by seniority first and may be determined by facility needs. The innovative 2-2-3 schedule provides staff with a better work‑life balance: two consecutive days, two days off, three consecutive days, and two days off, repeating with a 3‑day weekend every other week.

Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent AND two (2) years or more full‑time work experience.
OR One (1) year or more of college level coursework and one (1) year or more of full‑time work experience.
OR Two (2) years or more of college level coursework.
Minimum Physical Requirements Adequate physical condition to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation. Essential tasks include donning a self‑contained breathing apparatus and performing evacuation procedures, potentially including search and rescue functions. Compliance with OSHA standards for such devices is required.
Preferred Qualifications Experience working in a correctional setting, military experience.
Special Requirements Overtime work and weekend/holiday work may be required. Must attend and pass annual mandated training. Candidates must pass a background investigation applicable to the position. Candidates with felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions within the past five (5) years require a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections.
