Job description

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (279)

The closing date is 26 December 2025

Trust Doctor/Senior Clinic Fellow in Neurosurgery

Our South‑East Neurosurgery/Spinal surgery unit consists of 9 neurosurgical and 4 spinal consultants (with orthopaedic and/or neurosurgical training). By accepting this job you will be expected to integrate into a team of 9 registrars, 6 SHO level doctors, 2 foundation year 1 doctors and 2 advance clinical practitioners (ACP). There are 2 dedicated neurosurgical wards at the RSCH and a number of critical care beds. The department is based in the new Louisa Martindale Building (3T) providing state‑of‑the‑art facilities including 3 dedicated neuro/spinal theatres with intra‑operative MRI facilities, a brand‑new neurointerventional angiography suite, O‑arm, 3 neuro‑navigation systems, CT/MRI facilities near neuro‑theatres and multiple MDT rooms.

You will have opportunities to perform and assist in a variety of neurosurgical and spinal surgical procedures with appropriate supervision and mentorship. You will also develop your portfolio with governance activities (audits, quality improvement projects), teaching and research. The role involves a 1 in 10 on‑call schedule, including long days and night shifts, dealing with acute referrals and surgical emergencies from the wider Sussex and Kent areas. Additional opportunities include attending subspecialty clinics/MDTs and local teaching.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will cover both elective and emergency adult neurosurgery and spinal conditions across registrars on‑calls, wards, theatres, ICU/HDU, outpatient clinics and the emergency department. The registrar on‑call rota is 1:10 and you will work with a highly motivated theatre, nursing, therapy and pharmacy team. This is an excellent opportunity for middle‑grade doctors aspiring to complete neurosurgical training. Posts are well supported and closely supervised by consultants, with an educational and clinical supervisor assigned and regular career progress supervision. Those at FRCS Neurosurgery level will be closely guided and supported.

On‑call commitment: 1:10, including night work.

Occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances may arise; these will be discussed with senior colleagues and will not be required for prolonged periods.
