Job description

In line with our redeployment policy, we’ll prioritise applications from employees who are under formal notice of redundancy

Salary: £26,793 per annum/ £13.74 per hour

Contract: Permanent

Hours/ working pattern: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

Joining the hard working and dedicated team here at Wiltshire Landscape you will play a key role in maintaining our special places and ensuring they are presented to the highest possible standard. Based at the National Trust Estate Office at Stonehenge Cottages your work will be split between our South Wiltshire properties & the Stonehenge Landscape.

What it's like to work here

The Wiltshire Countryside Team looks after twelve rural properties in the Wiltshire Landscape portfolio, stretching far and wide across our beautiful county. With two operational bases in the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site, you will find opportunities to assist across the whole portfolio, but you will primarily report to Stonehenge Cottages / Countess Farm and focus on five exceptional sites in South Wiltshire.

Cley Hill, Figsbury Ring, Pepperbox Hill, White Barrow and sections of Stonehenge Landscape will be in your care, under the supervision of the Area Ranger for South Wiltshire. There’s plenty to keep you occupied whilst having enough time to get to know your sites intimately. Between them, they read like a who’s who of special designations: SSSI, Scheduled Monument, World Heritage Site, AONB, SPA, SAC, International Dark Sky Reserve. No two days are the same when working to protect this globally important range of features, and the opportunities for learning are endless

There is lots going on, including scrub management, practical estate maintenance work, regular volunteer work parties and ecological surveying, to name but a few elements of this exciting ranger role.

What you'll be doing

Line managed by our Area Ranger for South Wiltshire you will chiefly undertake practical tasks shaping habitats & protecting our archaeology, facilitating access, repairing estate furniture, and ensuring presentation remains at a high standard. This includes organising and maintaining tools, vehicles and equipment associated with practical work.

You will work both on your own and with other members of staff, as well as with several volunteer groups supervising them on a variety of practical tasks. Communication and administrative duties tied to volunteer management will be essential. It is all about being outside and getting your hands dirty, looking after our nature and heritage, and making our sites accessible for our many visitors.

With your endless passion for our work, you will help with the protection and care of habitats, wildlife, property and machinery, and your passion will inspire others to love this beautiful place as much as you do. We want you to engage with visitors, making time to talk to them, not rushing away to the next task.

You will make sure that, at every twist and turn of these fantastic landscapes, we’re delivering outstanding outdoors experiences and excellent conservation work. You’ll share our common goal with customers and build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the National Trust.

In this role, you’ll work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings. A full UK driving licence will be essential to fulfil the requirements of this role.

Please also read the full role profile, attached to this advert.

Who we're looking for

Applications from redeployees are assessed against the minimum criteria for the role. In your application, please provide details of how you meet the minimum criteria below:

  • ability to carry out physical tasks to protect and improve land, habitats, and access
  • confidence in helping visitors understand and enjoy the place and its conservation work
  • understanding of safety procedures and ability to help others stay safe
  • experience in working well with colleagues and supporting volunteers
  • capability to organise work and use tools, time and materials responsibly
  • awareness of how to help the property run well and support its long‑term future
  • a driver with a full UK driving licence

Additional criteria for all other applicants. We’d love to hear from you if you’re:

  • practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
  • happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters
  • hard‑working and willing to learn
  • able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
  • experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
  • able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
  • a driver with a full UK driving licence

  • Season ticket loan
  • EV car lease scheme
