Role description

As part of a growing and agile business, our Environmental Planning team is looking for a Principal Environmental Consultant with a broad range of EIA experience. You will work collaboratively with a range of technical specialists on a broad spectrum of projects, lead and coordinate Environmental Impact Assessments and related deliverables, work closely with clients, develop new areas of business and mentor others in the team. Your work may involve protected species, pollution, surface water and materials management, air quality or noise in some of the world’s busiest and most beautiful locations.

Role accountabilities
  • Lead the coordination and delivery of environmental work undertaken by multidisciplinary teams, influencing project development and delivering optimal environmental outcomes
  • Undertake your own work to an excellent standard, and review the work of others
  • Work in partnership with other members of the Impact Assessment Team across the UK
  • Proactively manage selected projects or components, taking responsibility for resource allocation, managing subcontractors and quality assurance
  • Lead and support tender proposals/bids as part of a project‑winning team
  • Provide environmental advice and support to clients, project managers and colleagues
  • Engage with consultees and stakeholders
  • Develop outstanding reports – the ability to summarise and explain outcomes to non‑technical audiences is critical
  • Oversee project performance on technical, quality, commercial, and health and safety aspects
Qualifications & Experience
  • Good knowledge of EIA practices and procedures and a solid understanding of environmental and sustainability principles and technical specialisms
  • Experience across a range of project types, ideally within the energy, residential/mixed use/regeneration sector, and in major infrastructure projects including rail and highways
  • Proven experience of managing and coordinating EIA screening and scoping activities and Environmental Statements, including technical review of specialist chapters
  • Practical knowledge of the UK planning system and consenting process
  • Strong report writing, verbal, and presentation skills with experience reviewing the work of others to ensure quality
  • Experience in multidisciplinary coordination and leadership of projects, with strong project management and technical skills
  • Experience consulting and negotiating with planning authorities, regulators and stakeholders
  • Ability to work as part of an established team and, where applicable, supervise staff members
  • Commercial expertise, including forecasting, project management and quality assurance
  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification, preferably with chartered status or working towards it
  • A valid UK driving licence
  • Desired: Experience in the delivery of SEA and/or Integrated Impact Assessment (IIA) projects
  • Desired: Knowledge and application experience of sustainability, waste or carbon assessments
