Working 36.5 hours per week

Birmingham City Council is seeking a Principal Strategy and Performance Officer to join our Place, Prosperity and Sustainability directorate. This is a vital role within the Infrastructure and Sustainability division, designed to provide exceptional business and service support that drives organisational improvement and growth.

As a key member of the team, you will be at the forefront of developing a framework that ensures governance and assurance around the directorate’s key priorities and programmes and facilitating continuous service enhancements that align directly with our corporate plan and council priorities. The Role: What You’ll Do

Reporting to the Place, Strategy and Performance Manager, you will lead on coordinating performance reporting and providing comprehensive support for programme performance management. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Performance Analysis: Monitoring and measuring programme-level activities while translating complex data into accessible information for a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Governance & Assurance: Supporting the delivery of the directorate’s governance framework to ensure alignment with corporate standards.
  • Project Oversight: Assisting in the organisation of designated programmes and projects that achieve outcomes linked to the council’s strategic goals.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Acting as a "critical friend" to external funding partners and driving efficiency in financial and procurement processes for funded projects.

What You’ll Bring

We are looking for a candidate who combines technical expertise with the ability to influence others. To be successful, you should have:

  • Qualifications: A professional qualification in Project Management or equivalent professional experience.
  • Technical Proficiency: A solid understanding of performance management systems, specifically Power BI, to provide data-driven solutions.
  • Experience: Extensive experience in roles focused on enhancing service delivery outcomes and managing conflicting demands across multiple.
  • Skills: Exceptional diagnostic expertise, with the ability to analyse diverse evidence sources to generate insights and propose effective solutions.
  • Communication: The capability to convey complex ideas clearly to diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge: Council or public sector governance knowledge is essential
