Job description
About Us

You will be joining a friendly, dynamic and fast paced team within the Place Shaping Service. The team responsible for delivering the transport strategy and policy of Oxfordshire County Council. There will be no day which is ever the same, with everyday bringing a unique challenge but also opportunities.

Our work involves working closely with partners through collaboration, engagement and co-production to deliver change, joint working and creative thinking on how to improve the lives of those living, working and visiting Oxfordshire. Place Shaping is a new approach for the County Council and we need enthusiastic, forward thinking individuals that understand how to make places and people thrive and a willing to challenge the status quo and bring new ideas to the table.

About the Role

Are you looking for a varied and challenging role which really gets you thinking and makes a difference for the lives of communities across Oxfordshire? If so, this might be the role for you.

The role sits within the Transport Strategy and Policy team and you will be expected to support senior colleagues across the team. The team is currently embarking on a challenging programme of delivering the “Movement and Place Plans” which are part 2’s of the Local Transport Connectivity Plan (LTCP). In addition to this, your work will involve supporting a plethora of other workloads from the Bus and Coach Strategy to LTCP monitoring, integrated transport, consultation responses and much more.

A critical component to this role will be stakeholder engagement both external (i.e. with councillors, town and parishes and key stakeholders) and internal colleagues. It is a very politically sensitive role, and you will need to manage your own time effectively to deliver the overall team’s objectives.

To support the team in their objectives it is important that you have proficient IT skills in particular with MS Office (Word, Excel & PowerPoint) as this software is used on a day-to-day basis. In addition, the ability to learn or have an awareness of digital planning (e.g. AutoCAD, ArcGIS/QGIS and other software applications) would be beneficial.

We are currently working via a hybrid approach working towards an expectation of being in the office 2 days per week – however, this is flexible to meet the business need. Each month, on Tuesdays, we have an in-person team meeting where you will be expected to attend. We also undertake site visits around once a month.

About you

We are actively seeking someone with a "can do attitude" and who wants to shape the future of Oxfordshire’s communities. You will be supported by senior colleagues, but to be successful in this role you must have the ability to be well organised, driven to make a difference and want to seek new challenges. You must want to push boundaries and challenge current thinking and/ or approach to transport strategy.

This role would be ideal for someone who is looking for their first role within local government, wants to find a fulfilling role which is keen to make a difference. You will not be joining a team to make the numbers up and it will not suit someone who just wants a change in job without the passion of what we are working towards delivering through our Local Transport Connectivity Plan.

Rewards and benefits
  • Culture of flexible and agile working;
  • Technology to support agile working, where role permits;
  • 30 days holiday p.a. plus bank holidays (Increasing to 32 days after 10 years’ service);
  • Option to ‘buy’ additional holiday;
  • Employee Assistance Programme including access to health and wellbeing support;
  • Membership of the Local Government contributory pension scheme, with an employer’s contribution of up to 19.9%;
  • Enhanced family friendly policies;
  • Local and national discounts for shopping and travel;
  • Great learning and development opportunities to support your ongoing development;
  • Will be joining a friendly team.
