The Department of Radiology at South Tyneside and Sunderland is a large busy department hosted across 2 main acute sites with services at multiple peripheral sites in the community. There is a full range of modern, recently acquired, imaging equipment across both acute sites with 5 static CT scanners and 3 static MRI scanners. This is supplemented by a new large purpose‑built Diagnostic Imaging Centre at South Tyneside, with 2 CT scanners, 2 MRI scanners and a PET CT scanner to be installed. As well as diagnostic work the department has an IR suite based at Sunderland Royal Hospital with further interventional rooms at South Tyneside.

Applications are encouraged and welcomed from doctors who have, or are expected to receive, a CCST in Radiology. We welcome applications from General Radiologists and those with specialist interests. The department will seek to ensure that the post-holder is able to develop and consolidate any areas of particular interest. The Trust offers a wide range of clinical services requiring general and specialist Radiology input including intensive care, ophthalmology, head and neck surgery, paediatrics and neonatology, renal medicine, clinical haematology, vascular surgery and genito‑urinary medicine.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will hold continuous responsibility for any patient under their care, ensuring high quality, safe patient care and experience.

The postholder is expected to work within multidisciplinary teams to ensure compliance with national imaging and reporting quality and performance metrics to ensure patients are diagnosed and therefore treated efficiently.

As far as possible the department will seek to ensure that the post-holder is able to develop and consolidate any areas of particular interest. Final job plans will be agreed in discussion between the successful candidate and the Clinical Director and will be subject to annual review.

The postholder will be expected to attend and contribute to the monthly Directorate/Clinical Governance meeting and the monthly REALM meeting, ensuring effective clinical governance across the Directorate.

Consultants undertaking clinical activities must participate in high quality clinical audit and encourage and support their clinical teams to carry out both local, regional and national audit activity.
