Job description

Reports to: Director of Product and Design

Working in collaboration with UK designers and Far East engineers to design and develop commercial, stylish and innovative products with the highest levels of quality for the iCandy brand.

The role is primarily product design focused with a heavy lean in to engineering to ensure concepts are developed with an in-depth understanding of manufacturing end engineering.

The core focus of the role will be to use a customer focused approach to delivering innovative product design engineering solutions across all product in iCandy’s NPD pipeline.

Key Accountabilities / Responsibilities

• Delivering product design and engineering solutions for a range of nursery products from brief through the concept design stages.
• Working on concepts and detail design individually and as part of a team.
• Deliver innovative consumer focused design and mechanical solutions to engineering challenges.
• Work closely with iCandy’s Consultant Industrial Designers during concept design to embed the creative vision whilst meeting the functional intent.
• Identify suitable manufacturing processes and materials during concept development.
• Work closely with iCandy China’s engineering team when handing over concepts to ensure clarity in vision.
• Liaise with the engineering teams during detail design to ensure aesthetic intent is being maintained.
• Manage critical paths during the concept stages to ensure on time delivery of the iCandy NPD pipeline.
• Work with other members of the design team to identify new product opportunities through multiple channels (blue-sky, ethnographics, focus groups etc).
• Ensure products are developed to the required costs as specified in the product brief.
• Making of proof of concept prototypes and commissioning of advanced prototypes for product assessment.
• Researching materials, processes or market requirements.
• Identify new and emerging technologies and materials that could be transferred in to the industry.
• Work closely with the compliance team throughout the concept design process to ensure safety and compliance requirements are adhered to.
• Travel: when necessary, travel to iCandy China to review designs with Engineering and Manufacturing. Attend trade shows / events in Europe.
• Present designs (concepts, details) to key members of iCandy when required.
• Continually research the market place to ensure up to date knowledge of the competition.

Knowledge and Skills: Essential

• Relevant Design degree (preferably BSc).
• Minimum 3 years experience in design dept of a manufacturer, design consultancy or retailer.
• Experience of working with manufacturing facilities.
• Experience of developing plastic products.
• Ability to communicate confidently at all levels.
• 3D CAD.
• Proven track record in developing innovative products from concept to details to specific standards.

• Experience of working with Far East manufacturers.
• Experience of working in the nursery industry KPI’s.
• Creation of innovative product solutions benchmarked against the competition.
