Director - Ground Engineering at RPS

Role Purpose

We are looking to appoint a Director to help lead growth for our UK Ground Engineering and Environmental Compliance team and manage well-established teams in England and Wales. The role combines duties such as maximizing financial performance, quality assurance, client satisfaction, and team leadership. The postholder will play a pivotal role in business development, guiding the unit into new markets and service offerings.

What Can Be Achieved In This Role

  • Deliver financial performance in line with the Annual Business Plan, achieving revenue and profit margin targets and improving growth metrics.
  • Drive growth and retention of key client accounts and develop new business opportunities.
  • Recruit and launch innovative and profitable service offerings.
  • Provide strong leadership to a 15+ person team, delivering for clients and fostering development opportunities for colleagues.

Relevant facts & figures

  • Lead a team of 15+ people, including up to 4 direct reports.
  • Work alongside five other directors supporting functions within the team.
  • Responsible for geoenvironmental services across England and Wales.
  • Spend over 50% of time on billable project work.

  • Financial Management: Hold accountability for financial performance, oversee project-level financials, and shape Business Plan objectives.
  • Leadership & Management: Lead a 15‑person geo‑environmental team, oversee team structure, performance management, and professional development.
  • Client Relationship Management: Maintain strategic oversight of existing key accounts, secure new clients, and coordinate multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Maintaining Quality Assurance Standards: Ensure compliance with internal QA processes and external regulatory standards; champion quality culture.
  • Business Development: Identify new clients and markets, develop service offerings, and lead innovation initiatives.

BENEFICIAL Training, Qualifications, Or Equivalent Work Experience

  • Strong geo‑environmental and geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Relevant chartership, IOSH, or leadership qualifications helpful but not essential.
