Children's Speech & Language Therapist - Band 5 or Newly Qualified

Full-time & Part-time hours considered

Due to an ever-increasing demand for our services, Bromley Healthcare’s Children’s SLT Service is continuing to expand our fantastic and supportive team.

• Regular Band 5 seminars on a variety of clinical areas (e.g. Autism Spectrum Conditions, Developmental Language Disorder, Speech Disorders, Stammering, EHCP report writing, target setting), as well as the opportunity to apply for external training courses
• Support for newly qualified therapists through the RCSLT competencies, with weekly line management initially
• Access to an SLT mentor
• Whole-team CPD meetings and small clinical supervision groups
• Access to clinical specialists for specialist opinions and support

• We are currently developing a Universal, Targeted Specialist model in mainstream schools, delivering EHCP intervention in mainstream schools, as well as expanding our buy‑in service in mainstream schools, special schools and provisions.

Day-to-day, you will provide assessment and therapy services to a mixed paediatric caseload with speech, language and communication needs, as well as report writing and opportunities for training parents/carers and those working with children with SLCN. Once established within the team, there are opportunities for working within one of many special schools and provisions with support, working with children with a variety of severe, additional and complex needs, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Learning Difficulties, Developmental Language Disorder and Speech Disorders. The post holder is responsible to safeguard children, young people and adults at risk.

To provide a speech and language therapy service to patients with communication and/or swallowing disorders with appropriate support from a supervisor.

To make a differential diagnosis based on evidence from assessment, leading to decisions about intervention/treatment, seeking advice as appropriate.

To communicate complex condition‑related information from assessment to clients, carers, families and members of the multi‑disciplinary team/other professions.

To maintain sensitivity at all times to the emotional needs of patients/clients and their careers in particular when imparting potentially distressing information regarding the nature of the patient/client’s difficulties and implications of the same.

To initiate and provide a variety of treatment options according to patient's needs, including the use of interpreters as appropriate, with support from senior therapists.

To negotiate and work closely with clients, carers, other professionals and families, agreeing decision‑making and prioritisation relevant to the patient/client’s management, devising agreed care plans based on best practice, seeking advice as necessary.

To use methods of alternative communication e.g. signing, symbols, speech synthesisers after training to maximise the client’s communication.

To demonstrate empathy with clients, carers and families and colleagues, aiming to achieve effective communication, particularly where barriers to understanding exist.

• Recognised speech & language therapy degree qualification or equivalent.
• Health Professions Council Licence to practice.
• Registered member of Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists.
• Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

• Evidence of developing responsibility for clinic and caseload management.
• Experience of working with other professionals relevant to client groups.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including observation, listening and empathy.
• Well developed analytical skills with use of knowledge necessary for case load management, assessment and therapy relevant to client group e.g. prioritisation
• Highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment diagnosis and treatment of clients/patients.
• Ability to transcribe speech phonetically.
• Skills in handling clients/ patients with disabilities.
• Ability to maintain intense concentration in all aspects of patient management for prolonged periods.
• Good analytical skills with use of knowledge necessary for case load management, assessment and therapy relevant to client group e.g. prioritisation.
• Developing negotiation and problem solving skills with clients, carers and other professionals.
• Developing auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of clients / patients.

Salary is determined by NHS experience and current banding/pay point. External applicants will begin at the entry point of the salary scale in line with NHS terms and conditions.
