Job overview

The post holder will have responsibility in PCC for the implementation of the education, training and development strategy across the CSU for all staff groups.

The post holder will ensure the facilitation of planned education and training programmes for our expanding team to ensure a competent and confident nursing workforce, able to meet service needs. S/he will have responsibility to contribute to the improvement of the quality of care through staff education, support and development. This will be achieved by teaching and supporting colleagues, demonstration of effective leadership, role modelling and participation in audit and research.

Working collaboratively with PCC Matron, Matron for Education, clinical leaders, Clinical educators, higher education institutions, and the multidisciplinary team, the practitioner supports induction, ongoing competency development, and career progression across nursing and allied health professionals within paediatric critical care.

Main duties of the job

Lead the planning, delivery, and evaluation of education and training programmes specific to paediatric critical care

Support staff development from novice to expert level, including new starters, transition, and advanced practice pathways

Facilitate clinical skills training, simulation, and competency assessment aligned with national and local standards

Act as an expert educational resource for paediatric critical care practice, evidence-based care, and learning theory

Contribute to workforce development, succession planning, and quality improvement initiatives

Support safe practice by identifying learning needs through audit, incident review, and service developments

Provide leadership, mentorship, and supervision to staff involved in education and practice development

Ensure education programmes meet regulatory, professional, and organisational requirements

Person specification
Qualifications & Professional Registration
  • • Registered healthcare professional (e.g. NMC, HCPC) with current registration or equivalent professional background with significant paediatric critical care experience
  • • Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. Nursing, AHP, Education, Health or Leadership)
  • • Recognised qualification in education, teaching, or training (e.g. PGCert Education, Practice Education qualification)
  • • Evidence of advanced qualification paediatric critical care
  • • Master’s degree or working towards MSc/MA in Education, Leadership, or Paediatric Critical Care
  • • Coaching or faculty development qualification
Experience
  • • Significant post-registration or equivalent experience within paediatric critical care, paediatric intensive care, high dependency, or a closely related acute paediatric specialty
  • • Experience of delivering education and training to multidisciplinary staff within a healthcare setting
  • • Experience contributing to the design, delivery, and evaluation of education programmes aligned to service needs
  • • Experience of leading education initiatives or service improvement projects within PCC
  • • Experience of supervising or managing staff
Knowledge
  • • Expert understanding of paediatric critical care practice and current evidence-based standards
  • • In-depth knowledge of adult learning theory and clinical education methodologies
