About the business unit

We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.

Overview of the role

We are currently looking to expand our transport modelling team in our Transport & Mobility Solutions (TMS) division. As a Senior/Principal Transport Modeller you will be involved with a range of transport modelling projects working in teams based across the UK and Europe. You will be working on projects for high profile clients such as Department for Transport, National Highways, East West Rail Co and Heathrow Airport Ltd and a wide range of local clients and projects will have responsibility for delivering modelling work following our best practice guidelines.

You will form part of a national team and be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues in our wider TMS division.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Project and task involvement or management on modelling projects to include survey programmes, model development, calibration, validation, demand forecasting and economic appraisal
  • Checking outputs for compliance with quality requirements and industry best practice and motivate others to do so as well
  • Organise, train and mentor other modelling resources in order to ensure project delivery and staff / team development
  • Provide key inputs to the development of business cases and scheme assessments
  • Liaise with clients and other project stakeholders
  • Contribute to business development activities including proposal preparation
Candidate specification

As a member of our modelling team, you will be supported by experienced colleagues to deliver against applicable industry guidelines and standards. You will be integrated into our global business offering fantastic opportunities for your career to develop. In turn you will be expected to help support and develop junior colleagues.

The successful candidate will be committed to providing high quality, affordable and innovative solutions and advice to clients and have good report writing, project management, supervisory, communication and technical ability.

To carry out the responsibilities you will require a numerical degree at bachelors or masters level or an equivalent qualification. The candidate will have in-depth experience of developing highway and public transport models from first principles and be skilled in the development of robust models to support decision‑making.

You will have extensive experience of modelling software such as SATURN, VISUM, EMME or CUBE and Diadem. Survey data analysis skills alongside an understanding of variable demand modelling and forecasting (following TAG guidance) are also key skillsets necessary for the role.

The following would also be desirable:

  • Expertise in Geographic Information System (GIS), ArcMap, QGIS or MAPINFO
  • Knowledge of Python, SQL and other programming languages
  • Knowledge of microsimulation software such as VISSIM, PARAMICS and AIMSUN
  • A good understanding of the wider transport planning/engineering environment
