Job overview

We are looking to recruit a self‑motivated individual to join the Domestic Department at St Richard's Hospital (Chichester) as a Weekend Domestic Supervisor, who can work on their own and/or as part of a team. The post holder will be responsible for managing Domestic staff on a daily basis ensuring National Cleaning Standards are upheld.

Additional details: Saturday and Sunday (10 pm – 6 am with a one‑hour break).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role does not meet the minimum criteria for visa sponsorship under the current UK immigration rules, which set specific salary and skill thresholds. Communications and Relationship skills

  • Maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with Trust Policy.
  • Provide effective communication and to support and facilitate all types of meetings which have relevance to the operation of the department.
  • To aid hospital staff, visitors and patients when faced with difficult situations caused by third parties, following Trust policies and procedures.
  • To be able to communicate sensitive issues when dealing with the deceased family using tact and respect.
  • Guide and direct visitors and deal with telephone calls in a helpful and friendly manner, taking written notes of any relevant information.
  • To investigate and resolve complaints speedily and effectively, keeping a positive image of the department even when feedback is less than positive.
  • Take a leading role in any departmental information technology initiatives.
  • Provide advice and support to the domestic team.

Qualifications and Experience

  • As per Job Specification.

Analytical and Judgemental skills

  • To maintain effective and efficient records of all domestic services, observing varying trends and evidencing them to the senior domestic supervisor.
  • Communicate daily with all users regarding any variation in services that may be required. Using judgement to rearrange priorities when necessary and in consultation with the assistant domestic supervisor; implementing contingency plans as appropriate.
  • Understand and adhere to procedures for dealing with complaints and ensure they are dealt with promptly and sympathetically. Be capable of writing a report of an incident if required to do so.

Planning and Organisational skills

  • Attend daily briefing meeting with the senior domestic supervisor, and liaise with other supervisors. To ensure operational continuity and appraise colleagues of any human resource, disciplinary or logistical problems.
  • Respond to the bleep and subsequent messages, deploying staff appropriately.
  • Planning/scheduling of rosters and appropriate annual leave within the team to ensure the service is well covered at all times.
Person specification
Experience
  • Level NVQ 3 in a management discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of supervising a multi‑disciplined workforce. Knowledge of various cleaning methods including hydrogen peroxide.
  • IOSH.
  • Experience in the role of a domestic assistant or equivalent front line service.
Skills
  • Develop and maintain good communication with people, and at all levels about difficult matters and / or in difficult situations being aware of the disposition of patients and visitors and using appropriate communication.
  • Ability to assess how to safely transport hospital equipment and utilise appropriate manual handling techniques. Assess and understand technical equipment (ie hydrogen peroxide cleaning) understanding of health & safety and environmental regulations for safe transfer of patients and in general terms relating to visitors and staff.
  • Ability to prioritise work. Ability to understand rosters / rotas. Ability to plan ahead and assess positions in terms of maintaining storage areas.
