Job description
Setter / Operator – Turning (Fixed Head)

Role Setter / Operator – Turning (Fixed Head)

Reports to Team Leader – Turning (Fixed Head)

Location Unit 3A Roman Way, Glebe Farm Industrial Estate, Rugby, CV21 1DB

Hours 39 hrs / week, 6am – 4:15pm (Mon-Thurs)

Main Duties
  • To carry out complete CNC machine tool set ups as per process and tooling layouts applying good practice and in an efficient manner. (Fixed Head Turning)
  • Production of ‘First Off’ components to issued drawing and to ensure the safety of the production process for following production run.
  • Pre-production kitting for future production runs, including the preparation of tooling, machine ancillaries and NC program.
  • Post-production kitting and inspection of tooling for wear or damage. Ensuring any items for replacement or repair are identified and this information is communicated to the Production Manager.
  • Complete updates of tooling and process information following the production run to ensure all relevant information is accurately captured and available for future setting of the component production.
  • To input daily shift setting and production information into the production scheduling system and update the visual management systems, including the accurate recording of setting pieces and production scrap issues.
  • Communication of daily setting progress and information to section leader and Production manager where required.
  • Operation and management of machines during production runs, ensuring high standards of quality are always maintained.
  • Management of machine tooling during production, managing tool wear offsets and counters. Monitoring tool wear and escalating where issues may arise including rapid tool wear or failure which may risk component production.
  • Completion of ‘In Production’ inspection and the accurate recording of results. This will include the use of first principles inspection methods, shadow graphs, Vici Vision and OGP measurement systems.
  • Monitor daily production rates for the designated machine tools, escalating issues to the Team Leader, Production Manager and Quality Team where necessary.
  • To engage with the NPI and Continuous Improvement team to develop production strategies for new product and to further develop production process to achieve robust and efficient production of components.
  • To carry out the TPM process for daily, weekly, and monthly machine maintenance. Ensuring all records are updated, all actions are recorded and reported.
  • Maintain the working area and equipment to the highest standard of cleanliness and organisation, inline with the companies 5S processes.
Other Responsibilities
  • To engage with the positive H&S culture within Technoset and support the continued promotion of a safe working environment.
  • To provide support to the other production areas as and when required.
  • To attend NPI meetings, team meetings and RCA meetings.
  • To ensure all relevant information for production is kept updated.
  • Promote and demonstrate best practice in all aspects of the role.
  • Continue to develop skills and technical knowledge of production processes.
  • To support the forward thinking and continuous improvement culture throughout the business
Key Skills, Knowledge and Personal Attributes
  • Strong background in CNC machining and Fixed Turning
  • Experience in setting multi spindle and multi turret CNC Turning Centres including live tooling.
  • High attention to detail in all aspects of work. Setting, production and quality.
  • Strong understanding of NC programs and structure. Ability to read program code and identify programming errors.
  • Strong knowledge of materials, tooling, tooling geometry, tooling grades, and cutting data.
  • Ability to use measurement equipment and a strong knowledge of first principles measurement devices and techniques.
  • Ability to work in high pressure situations and continue to demonstrate good teamwork.
  • Good IT Skills, use of MS Office in particular Excel.
  • Good personal organisation, ability to prioritise and multi-task.
  • Good communication skills and a team player.
  • Good workspace organisation and tidiness.
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to innovate to find solutions.
  • A proactive can-do attitude and a willingness to learn.
Further Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge and experience with CAD/CAM systems. Autodesk Fusion 360, EdgeCAM or SolidCAM.
  • Ability to create NC programs for FANUC controlled Fixed Head Turning machine tools.
  • Experience in Sliding Head machine tool setting and operation.
  • Ability to develop machining strategies and plan production processes including the selection and specification of tooling.
