Base pay range

$52,125.00/yr - $83,378.00/yr

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State agency and/or accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) at the time the program was completed by applicant
  • Verification can be obtained from the State approving agency or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing
  • Licensure: Full - active - current and unrestricted licensure as a licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State - Territory or Commonwealth (i.e. - Puerto Rico) of the United States - or District of Columbia
  • English Language Proficiency: Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) - and 7407(d)
  • Grade Determinations: GS-3 None beyond the basic requirements
  • LPNs at this grade level are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license (e.g. - medication administration)
  • however - completed work may require routine or detailed higher-level review depending upon the complexity of the duties involved
  • GS-4 Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN
  • OR Graduation from an approved school and one year of experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital - outpatient clinic - nursing home - or other supervised medical - nursing - or patient care facility with practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures
  • OR Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration
  • LPNs at GS-4 perform all duties of GS-3 but with greater judgment and less supervision
  • GS-5 Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems
  • Works with the RN and/or MD/DO to orient/train less experienced staff in accordance with standards of practice
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a responsible member of the nursing team and interact with patients, family, and other staff
  • Knowledge and skill to prepare, administer, and document actions taken for commonly prescribed medications as permitted by local policies
  • Observation and documentation of patient response to medications and changes in condition reported to RN or MD/DO
  • Ability to recognize the need for and institute emergency measures when indicated
  • Recognizes breakage/malfunction or loss of equipment and reports to appropriate personnel
  • Completed work is under the general supervision of an RN or MD/DO
  • GS-6 Completion of at least one year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level and fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5
  • Technically proficient in initiating and completing assigned duties in providing care to variable patient populations
  • Knowledge to carry out assigned patient care based on patient conditions and to use judgment in selecting procedures
  • Observes and documents patient information; prepares and administers medications and treatments as appropriate
  • Responds to urgent or emergent patient care situations with appropriate actions
  • Maintains professional behavior and customer service standards in all interactions
  • Prepares and administers medications and documents patient response
  • Preceptor duties in orienting and training less experienced staff
  • Actively seeks educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge

Duties

  • Applications will be reviewed and referred at regular intervals based on the needs of the facility
  • The LPN assists the registered nurse with the care of patients with acute and rapidly changing physical and/or emotional needs, applying specialized technical skills
  • Duties Included but are not limited to: Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates patient care; assist with administrative duties including faxing, patient portal messaging and phone triage
  • Collaborates with the RN/Provider in developing a plan of care individualized to patient needs
  • Contributes to the interdisciplinary team in the development, implementation and evaluation of the patient\'s treatment and follow-up care
  • Collaborates with other services regarding changes in patient condition, lab results, responses to treatment plan
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in performing support duties for complex diagnostic tests
  • Meets patients\' needs by direct physical care and psychosocial intervention; assume responsibility for nursing management of unstable patients
  • Judgments prior to preparing and administering prescribed medications; documents changes and reports deviations to RN or MD/DO
  • Provides patient/family instruction regarding medications and care
  • Performs support duties for diagnostic procedures, including patient prep and monitoring
  • Establishes relationships with patients and families to promote communication and care
  • Maintains privacy and dignity in all aspects of care
  • Incorporates customer service standards in all interactions
  • Serves as a preceptor in orienting and training staff and pursues educational opportunities
  • Work Schedule: 11:30pm to 8am with weekend rotation OR 7:30am to 4:00pm with weekend rotation and off tour rotation
