Sonic Healthcare is an internationally renowned healthcare provider with a demonstrable track record of medical services across the world. Headquartered in Sydney, Australia, Sonic is an ASX Top 50 company that has grown to become one of the world’s leading healthcare providers, specialising in pathology, radiology and primary care medical centres. We have operations in Australia, the USA, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand. Sonic Healthcare UK encompasses the two main entities in the UK, The Doctors Laboratory (TDL) and Health Services Laboratories (HSL). HSL is a partnership between The Doctors Laboratory (TDL), Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH). HSL was formed to provide pathology services to the NHS Trusts and has expanded further to provide services to other NHS Trusts. Over 3,500 staff work at Sonic Healthcare UK, primarily under the TDL or HSL banner. Our purpose is to deliver medically‑led diagnostics, innovation, value and long‑term investment to healthcare. With our core laboratory based at The Halo Building in London WC1H 9AX, we also have an expanding site in Manchester as well as smaller hospital‑based laboratories across the country. We maintain rigorously high standards of quality, whilst also delivering efficiencies to healthcare through careful workforce planning, pioneering technology and significant investment in infrastructure and IT.
An opportunity exists for a full‑time, permanent Medical Laboratory Assistant wishing to work within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion sections at 60 Whitfield Street on shifts which will be split 80:20 nights/days. Up to 80% of this role will be assigned to cover night shifts – typically 3 night shifts per week and any night shifts worked will attract additional payments via enhancement claims. The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Laboratory is state‑of‑the‑art, superbly equipped and handles the workload of University College London Hospitals (UCLH). Working as part of a team, this is an excellent opportunity to develop your skills, knowledge and experience in a highly automated and complex clinical Haematology and Blood Transfusion department. The laboratory is responsible for servicing the Haematology pathology needs of UCLH, the largest cancer referral centre in Western Europe. It is also a national referral centre for Thrombotic Thrombocytopaenic Purpura (TTP). There is a large cohort of Haematology oncology referral work and also a large haemoglobinopathy support requirement, so the blood film morphology seen is extremely varied and second to none. Novel therapies such as CAR‑T therapy make for some morphological anomalies rarely seen elsewhere. The Blood Transfusion department is a blood establishment, where blood compatibility testing and blood provision is provided to various patient cohorts such as sickle cell patients who are on regular exchange programmes, patients requiring top‑up transfusions from the Cancer Centre daycare, mainly Haematology, oncology and Thalassaemia Major. Complex cases are seen at foetal medicine unit (FMU), where patients at high risk are referred from other areas of the country. Blood provision is also provided for pre‑op patients at National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) and Westmoreland Hospital. The BT service also supports the TTP plasma exchange service.
We respect and value the diversity of our staff and welcome applications from diverse communities.
