A leading engineering solutions provider in Staffordshire is offering an apprenticeship for a Highways Maintenance Operative. The role involves varied highway maintenance tasks, including patching, drainage, and responding to incidents. Applicants need GCSE qualifications in Maths and English, a full UK driving license, and a passion for teamwork. Starting Salary: £25,536 (Subject to review)
Working hours: Mon-Friday 7:30–16:00 (40hrs/week)
As part of your apprenticeship, you will be enrolled onto the Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Level 2 programme, which will take approximately 21 months to complete. You will be fully supported by our partnered college through 1‑2‑1 support, e‑learning materials, and access to technical experts in the workplace.

Our Staffordshire account has worked with Staffordshire County Council since 2014 to manage and maintain the county’s highways infrastructure across 6,000 km of roads, cycle routes, bridges, tunnels, lighting, drainage, traffic signals, trees and land.
As a Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice, every day will be different. One day you might be installing traffic management systems; the next, you may be carrying out minor civil works such as temporary patching or ditching.
Perform a variety of highway maintenance tasks, including carriageway and footway patching, kerbing, ironwork replacement, and drainage maintenance.
Attend work briefings to receive instructions and guidance on driving and operating vehicles and plant equipment, using both general and specialist skills.
Participate in 24‑hour standby rotations during summer and winter for incident response, winter maintenance services, precautionary gritting and snow clearance.
Allocate and track time and resource utilisation in line with the relevant allocation system.
Maintain accurate records, complete all required paperwork, and communicate effectively with Amey colleagues, subcontractors, emergency services, police, clients and customers.
GCSE / Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English (Entry Level 3 required if not held).
Full UK driving licence.
Passion for developing your skills both professionally and personally.
Enthusiasm to be part of a high performing team and a drive for success.
Minimum age 18 years.
