Job description

Highways Maintenance Operative Apprentice – Area 10, Preston Brook

Starting salary: £26,813.00 per annum (Subject to review)

Working hours per week: Monday – Friday 7:00‑19:00 and nights 19:00‑07:00, 4 on 4 off rotating days and nights (42 hr/week)

What you will do:
  • Complete all aspects of highway maintenance, including routine and cyclical activities, minor civils works and litter picking.
  • Carry out minor civils and drainage works.
  • Undertake carriageway patching.
  • Maintain high technical standards.
  • Attend project and work briefings as required.
  • Drive and operate vehicles/plant requiring general and specialist skills.
  • Complete vehicle checks, routine maintenance (e.g., oil and water checks) and cleaning.
  • Participate in winter maintenance operations.
  • Assist with emergency call‑out operations.
  • Take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of your team, ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and protecting members of the public.
What you will bring:
  • Entry Level 3 in Maths and English during initial assessment (if you do not hold GCSE/Functional Skills qualifications).
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Ability to meet DBS requirements.
  • Minimum age 18 for eligibility.
  • Willingness to undergo random drug and alcohol testing as required.
