Qualifications

  • GCSE/Functional Skills qualifications may be required.
  • Must undergo random drug and alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

  • Install signs and poles.

  • Drive and operate vehicles/plant.

  • Participate in emergency call-out operations.

Job description
What you will do:
  • As a Highways Operative Apprentice, every day will be different! One day you may be installing new signs and poles; the next, you could be working on minor civil works such as cycle stands, new road markings or ditching.
  • Routine and cyclic maintenance activities.
  • Minor civil and drainage works.
  • Carriageway patching.
  • Maintain high technical standards.
  • Attend project and work briefings as required.
  • Drive and operate vehicles/plant requiring general and specialist skills.
  • Carry out vehicle checks, routine maintenance (e.g., oil and water checks) and cleaning.
  • Undertake all aspects of highway maintenance including litter picking and general civils work.
  • Support winter maintenance operations.
  • Participate in emergency call‑out operations.
  • Take responsibility for your own safety and that of your team to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and protect members of the public.
  • Carry out vehicle checks prior to starting your shift and complete defect books accurately.
  • Record drivers’ hours.
  • Allocate and capture time and resource utilisation in line with the allocation system.
  • Keep accurate records, complete paperwork and liaise with colleagues, subcontractors, emergency services, police, clients and the public.
What you will bring:
  • If you do not hold GCSE/Functional Skills qualifications, you must achieve a minimum of Entry Level 3 in Maths and English during initial assessment.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Basic knowledge of Health & Safety.
  • Passion for developing your professional and personal skills.
  • Enthusiasm for being part of a high‑performing team with a drive for success.
