The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Civil Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team. This is a hybrid position and with brand new office space in Belfast and flexible working options, we welcome applications from Engineers across Northern Ireland.

Our 130 strong Belfast Design Hub delivers a range of local, national and international projects for clients including Department for Infrastructure (DfI), Translink, National Highways, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Nation Transport Authority (NTA). Our multidisciplinary team encapsulates Highway Engineering, Bridge/Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, River & Coastal Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Traffic Engineering/Transport Planning, as well as being the BIM Centre of Excellence for Amey. The role

We are looking for an experienced Civil Engineer to join our Highways and Active Travel team. As a Civil Engineer, you will lead junior engineers in designing and delivering a variety of highway and public transport projects, including cycleways, greenways, junction improvements, highway drainage/SUDs, bus priority measures, pavement schemes, maintenance programs, and major roads or bridges. As part of our Belfast team, you’ll work on local projects and support initiatives in Ireland and the UK remotely. Your responsibilities will include:

  • To work in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks.
  • The preparation and checking of designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme. Overseeing the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and taking responsibility for their actions.
  • Liaising with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attending progress meetings, responding to queries etc.
  • Managing a small, locally based single discipline technical team and taking responsibility for delivery of workload.
  • Contributing to the preparation of bids and the general work winning function.
  • Working on site, either on a visiting basis or in a full time but temporary role and including out of hours working.
What you will bring to us:
  • Relevant experience in civil engineering
  • The ability to work in a commercial and customer focused way which achieves programme, meets performance targets and generates income
  • Be confident to work under minimum supervision and competent to check the work of others and supervise less experienced or junior staff
  • A good understanding of DMRB, other national standards, best practice guidance, local standards etc.
  • A good understanding of the CDM regulations and their relevance to highway design
  • The ability to support the preparation of briefs for fee quotes for delivery of services when required
  • Can deliver on time, within budget and to the quality required
  • Keep up to date with industry best practice and where appropriate apply best practice within the team
  • Experience of highway design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Causeway Flow, AutoCAD or other specialist packages is desirable
