The role

We are looking for an experienced Assistant Technical Manager, Business Event (ATMBE) to support the Technical Manager in planning, directing and managing the technical delivery of the Barbican Business Events program of over 350 commercial events. The Assistant Technical Manager will primarily support technical team and work in association with the Stage and Projection Teams in all areas of event organisation and technical delivery.

You will assist in overseeing and booking the equipment requirements for all set‑ups, soundchecks, rehearsals, use of our recording studio, and get‑ins/outs for the Centre’s Business Events activity, all within budget and on time. You will assist in creating the rotas for the technical team shifts.

  • Good knowledge of the commercial events industry, and a thorough understanding of all the creative processes of event planning.
  • Relevant professional technical training in the arts and an understanding of the creative processes of live performance.
  • Good working knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and safe working practices.
  • Demonstrable track record of working in a multi‑disciplinary arts venue at a supervisory level on artistic and commercial events.
  • Experience in supervising and motivating technical teams (permanent staff and casuals, working across disciplines) and providing support to staff when needed.
  • Experience of technical hires, freelancer bookings and equipment acquisitions.
  • Experience in supervising events and supporting clients, production teams and artists; delivering commercial events to a world class standard.
You must be able to demonstrate:
  • An ability to work across teams in the Centre, developing inter‑departmental relations and working methods.
  • An excellent level oral and written communication skills, including proven ability to communicate to a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • A good level of facilitation and negotiation skills and ability to juggle conflicting needs and priorities of multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • An ability to work inclusively and collaboratively across boundaries to achieve positive outcomes.
