Main area Colorectal Surgery. Grade: NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant. Contract: Permanent. Hours: Full time – 10 sessions per week with on-call rota. Job reference: 321-MS-CON-7591040-S5.

Site: Churchill Hospital, Town Oxford. Salary: £109,725 – £145,478 per annum (Yearly). Closing: 02/01/2026 23:59.

Main duties of the job

Surgical management of elective and emergency colorectal surgery with a primary interest in IBD surgery. The post holder will work within a team of eight consultants and one specialist and participate in the wider emergency on‑call rota.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing open and laparoscopic colorectal surgery.
  • Providing independent colonoscopy.
  • Managing lower GI endoscopy lists.
  • Leading the colorectal unit in collaboration with multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Participating in the on‑call rota for Emergency General Surgery at John Radcliffe Hospital.
  • Willingness to work at any Trust location within Oxfordshire, including Horton General Hospital.

Qualifications and Training
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
  • General & colorectal surgery, exposure to emergency general surgery, experience in inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Appropriate higher colorectal surgical qualification – e.g., MD/PhD.
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT or CESR (CP), with proposed CCT/CESR date within 6 months of interview.
  • Sub‑specialty interest in inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal failure.
Experience
  • Experience working in a specialist colorectal unit.
  • Evidence of decision making at consultant level and managing complex clinical problems.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Open and laparoscopic colorectal surgery.
  • Independent colonoscopy practice.
  • Leadership of clinical teams at consultant level.

  • English language proficiency (spoken and written).
  • Teaching and training experience.
