Job overview

The John Denmark Unit is looking for a full time (37.5 hours) CPN. This position is initially offered as an 18 months fixed term post. The postholder will be required to work predominantly Monday-Friday.

The John Denmark Unit:

There are 3 open acute NHS services for deaf people in the country, Manchester, Birmingham and London. Each service has a community team covering a defined geographical area.

The John Denmark Unit is based at Prestwich, Manchester and is part of the Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. The JDU provides high standards for specialist NHS mental health services to deaf people throughout the north of England, Wales and Scotland. The JDU consists of:

The aim of the services is to support service users through care pathways that foster a deaf identity, facilitate a positive self-image, increase self-esteem and aid recovery to enable the service user to function as a valuable member of society. The service employs both deaf and hearing staff to work in a multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the management of a caseload of clients within the Northwest of England, including liaison with local service providers including community mental health teams, carers, private and voluntary organisations. The post holder will participate in initial assessments and interventions to support deaf people with mental health needs. You will be expected to have advanced communication skills and be able to adapt modes of communication to meet the needs of the patient, predominantly using BSL.

The community team work closely with the John Denmark Unit inpatient service and the post holder will be expected to work alongside the MDT in planning and supporting both admission and discharge pathways

The Service offers excellent opportunities for personal and professional development via appraisal, personal development plans and training. The Service is committed to providing support to staff such as clinical supervision, individual psycho‑dynamic supervision and group or individual staff support.

Experience of working within a deaf mental health residential setting would be desirable and this post is also open to deaf staff with the appropriate qualifications required for the post.
