Job Summary

An exciting opportunity exists to join the speech and language therapy team at Dorset County Hospital. The role supports the highly regarded Macmillan Cancer Therapy Team, assessing and treating people with communication and swallowing difficulties pre‑ and post‑cancer treatment. The specialist position offers experience managing ENT, head and neck cancer aetiologies, and enables the development of instrumental assessment skills in videofluoroscopy and FEES.

Main duties
  • Provide diagnosis, assessment, treatment and management to patients with voice and/or swallowing problems secondary to ENT diagnoses, both inpatient and outpatient.
  • Provide diagnosis, assessment, treatment and management to patients with communication and/or swallowing problems secondary to cancer diagnoses for inpatients at Dorset County Hospital.
  • Lead on specialist provision to patients referred with ENT/Head & Neck, voice, speech and swallowing disorders in conjunction with the Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Develop and participate in training programmes across acute and community MDTs.
Education, Qualifications and Training (Essential)
  • Degree in Speech & Language Therapy recognised by the RCSLT.
  • Registered with the H.C.P.C.
  • Achieved dysphagia competencies to specialist level.
  • Valid driving licence and own vehicle.
  • Evidence of relevant CPD.
Experience (Essential)
  • Experience managing complex communication/swallowing disorders.
  • Experience working in acute settings including Emergency Care.
  • Experience developing & delivering training packages internally and externally to SALT & wider MDT.
  • Experience supervising staff and students.
  • Experience/knowledge of instrumental assessment in the management of dysphagia and voice disorders.
  • Experience/knowledge of assessment and treatment options within oncology, H+N and voice disorders.
Skills, Abilities & Knowledge (Essential)
  • Understanding of assessment, management and rehabilitation with complex dysphagia.
  • Ability to work as part of a specialised MDT.
  • Understanding of 'End of Life' pathway within acute and community settings.
  • Ability to deliver complex and sensitive concepts in easily understood language to patients, carers and staff.
  • Competent IT skills.
  • Have use of a car.
