Senior Engineer – Marine, Portsmouth

Responsibilities
- Operate, maintain, and repair the vessel’s auxiliary machinery, ship’s systems, and equipment in a safe, effective, and economical manner in accordance with relevant HASAW/MCA regulations.
- Ensure the safe, efficient, and economical operation and upkeep of the vessel’s hull and machinery systems, equipment, structure and fittings, including electrical and electronic equipment, embarked craft, ship’s boats and portable plant.
- Maintain overall responsibility for the operational state and maintenance of all machinery and electrical equipment onboard the vessel.
- Oversee the operation, performance, availability, security, custody, and safety of all equipment and systems in charge.
- Maintain custody of drawings, publications, and appropriate spare parts for the department.
- Compile records, reports, and returns, ensuring standards of fire prevention and firefighting onboard vessels.
- Prepare all necessary written procedures for the Engineering Department as required by the Quality System or ISM Code.
- Demonstrate responsibility for maintenance on more than one vessel, including demand of stores, fuel, and spare gear as necessary.
- Act as the Ship’s Safety and Environmental Officer.
- Mentor junior engineers.
- Operate winches while on towing tasks.
Qualifications
- Certificate of Competency issued under reg. III/3 of the STCW 95 Code (Chief Engineer – 9000 kW Tug).
- Leadership and people‑development skills.
- First Aid, Fire Fighting, Basic Sea Survival and CPSC certificates.
- ENG1 Medical qualification.
- Basic management and health‑and‑safety awareness.
- Manual handling competence.
- Experience in managing customers and suppliers.
- ISM Code knowledge.
- Marine industry background.
- Understanding of a planned maintenance system such as AMOS.
- Medium‑speed diesel engine experience.
- Good electrical knowledge.
- Flexibility to work variable hours.
- Capability to undertake towage winch operations.
