The Senior Commercial Director is accountable for the leadership, governance, and performance of STRABAG’s commercial operations across its building portfolio. The role provides strategic oversight of commercial strategy, risk management, procurement, and financial performance, while acting as a key member of the Business Unit leadership team. In addition to commercial excellence, the role contributes directly to wider business leadership, supporting business planning, growth strategy, client engagement, and organisational development. The Senior Commercial Director embeds ESG, ED&I, and social value outcomes into commercial decision‑making and prepares for progression into a Business Unit Director (Commercial) role. This leadership position demonstrates STRABAG’s People. Planet. Progress agenda and 9 Core Values through transparent governance, collaboration, and sustainable value creation.
- Take full accountability for commercial governance across the Business Unit, ensuring consistent application of STRABAG commercial policies, procedures, and authority levels (Ownership / Reliability).
- Lead commercial strategy for projects from pre‑construction through delivery and close‑out, ensuring risks and opportunities are proactively managed (Success / Transparency).
- Oversee Monthly Project Reviews (MPRs), ensuring accurate forecasting, cost control, cash management, and early identification of commercial risk (Transparency / Reliability).
- Provide senior challenge to project commercial teams, ensuring robust contract administration, change management, and protection of STRABAG’s contractual position (Ownership / Success).
- Ensure procurement strategies deliver best value, supply chain resilience, and fair, ethical treatment of subcontractors (Partnership / Responsibility).
- Act as senior commercial authority during bid and pre‑construction phases, shaping commercial strategies, risk allowances, and contractual positions (Future / Reliability).
- Support Business Development and Pre‑Construction teams in securing work, particularly in complex negotiated, two‑stage, and framework environments (Partnership / Success).
- Contribute commercial insight to design development, value engineering, and buildability discussions to optimise outcomes (Innovation / Future).
- Support the development of multi‑year business plans, including pipeline assessment, resource planning, and margin improvement strategies (Future / Success).
- Build strong senior‑level relationships with clients, funders, consultants, and JV partners to support repeat business and long‑term partnerships (Partnership / Appreciation).
- Collaborate closely with Operations, Commercial, and Central Services teams (Finance, Legal, HR, IT) to align governance and performance (Partnership / Transparency).
- Apply deep experience in general building contracting, ensuring commercial strategies reflect market realities and delivery risk (Reliability / Success).
- Where applicable, contribute expertise in multi‑room and residential sectors, supporting sector diversification and growth opportunities (Future / Innovation).
- Lead, mentor, and develop commercial teams, embedding succession planning and capability development aligned to future BU leadership needs (People Development / Appreciation).
- Embed ESG, ED&I, and social value considerations into commercial decision‑making, ensuring long‑term value over short‑term gain (Sustainability / Diversity).
