Job description

Sudlows is a highly successful specialised engineering company seeking a Network Designer to join our Technology team in Manchester, United Kingdom. The role involves specifying, designing, and handover of a range of physical networking technologies including wireless access and backhaul equipment, switches, routers, firewalls, and configuration side specifications such as IP addressing, VLANs, and VPNs.

Role Purpose

The Network Designer will have a strong understanding of the OSI model, familiarity with a wide range of manufacturers' networking equipment, and solid networking theory at layers 2 and 3. They will also maintain knowledge of structured cabling systems, as this underpins our active network offerings.

Key Tasks And Responsibilities
  • Liaise with Senior Account Managers, Technical Account Managers & Estimators to ensure high-quality, detailed designs and proposals are submitted in line with client requirements and Sudlows commercial expectations.
  • Carry out detailed site surveys of wireless and IP network installations in line with company procedures to ensure a high level of accuracy and competitiveness.
  • Produce detailed design packs from concept as required by Sudlows & its customers.
  • Liaise with the Bid Team to assist in producing detailed technical tender responses and design proposals for new business.
  • Apply for project pricing and liaise with supply chain to provide the best solutions to clients.
  • When required, complete pre-staging and configuration of network equipment.
  • Be the point of contact for Operations & respond to queries over scope of works and provide solutions to assist installation.
  • Support the wider design team as required and handle other design tasks.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • Demonstrable knowledge of network architecture design (switches, routers, firewalls).
  • Demonstrable knowledge of wireless network design for user access and backhaul technologies such as PtP and PtMP bridges.
  • Working knowledge of structured cabling systems.
  • Strong understanding of the OSI model, particularly layers 2 and 3.
  • Experience using design tools such as MS Visio.
  • Experience designing networks to support applications such as Data, VoIP, IPSec, HVAC, BMS, and EMS.
  • Knowledge of networking elements (QoS, DNS, DHCP, Radius, TACACS, SNMP, TCP/IP) and their incorporation into designs.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current network architecture and wireless networking standards.
  • Excellent customer‑facing manner.
  • Flexible approach to working location and times.
  • UK driving licence.
Desirable Skills & Experience
  • Industry‑recognised training and certification in wireless/networking such as CCNA / JNCIA or equivalent.
  • In‑depth knowledge of Juniper, Cisco & HP/Aruba product ranges.
  • Degree in an IT‑related discipline.
  • Experience or training in client/server installation.
  • Experience or training in intelligent building technologies (IP security, intelligent lighting, HVAC, energy management).
  • CSCS / ECS card.
