Mechanical Design Engineer – Fire Resistant Structures

ALTEN UK is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with expertise in fire‑resistant structures and hazard analysis to support advanced design and safety studies for critical mechanical systems. You will be part of a system design team, conducting fire risk studies, hazard reviews, and structural evaluations to ensure the mechanical integrity and safety of engineered systems under extreme conditions.

Responsibilities
  • Mechanical Design & Safety Analysis: support the design and assessment of mechanical structures to ensure fire resistance and compliance with safety requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard studies (including fire and explosion scenarios) in accordance with DSEAR and relevant safety standards.
  • Perform fire exposure and hazard analysis to validate that systems meet operational and safety criteria.
  • Fire Resistance & Structural Validation: analyse how fire, heat, and environmental hazards impact the performance and strength of mechanical systems.
  • Support fire analysis and modelling activities (including CFD fire analysis where applicable).
  • Validate and document system safety under fire and hazard conditions in collaboration with design and safety engineers.
  • Research, Review & System Support: carry out engineering research into fire‑resistant design methodologies and materials.
  • Provide technical input into hazard mitigation strategies and safety documentation.
  • Work within multi‑disciplinary teams (system design, structural, safety, and analysis) to integrate findings into the overall engineering solution.
Qualifications
  • Degree (or higher) in Mechanical, Process, Chemical or Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in mechanical design and hazard/risk assessments (especially fire hazard studies).
  • Understanding of fire‑resistant design principles, structural response to fire, and safety validation.
  • Experience with DSEAR and conducting hazard studies (HAZOP, HAZID).
  • Strong analytical capability – able to interpret CFD fire analyses or related data.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence across teams.
Desirable Experience
  • Background in defence, oil & gas, energy, or nuclear industries.
  • Knowledge of fire CFD, structural analysis, and system‑level safety validation.
  • Familiarity with DOE‑810 (export‑controlled work – preferred but not essential).
