Short Description: Independent Visitor required for befriending/mentoring support for young person in care in the Canterbury Area.
Independent Visitors (IVs) support a young person in care. The young people could be living with foster carers or a residential placement. We are currently looking for a volunteer for a young person based in the Canterbury area. The volunteer would need to be willing to travel to Herne Bay. Independent Visitors (IVs), are volunteer befrienders to children in care aged between five and nineteen. They are there to develop a long‑term friendship with a young person and give them an opportunity to access hobbies and interests, gain independence skills and generally have a fun day out doing activities such as going for lunch, walks, cinema or bowling. Visits with the young person would take place once a month for a couple of hours. In return we provide you with training to introduce you to the service and develop your personal skills; you will also gain experience and a sense of self‑satisfaction. All out‑of‑pocket travel and expenses are reimbursed for volunteers. As an Independent Visitor you would meet the young person you were matched with once a month for a couple of hours to do fun activities together whilst building a trusting and meaningful relationship.
Male volunteers are needed. You should be able to commit to at least two years, thereby providing the young person with long‑term consistency, and be able to spare at least 2 hours per month. Activities undertaken will be decided by you and the young person.
Skills – Sense of humour, patience, understanding, non‑judgemental, reliable. No formal qualifications required. Education or training in child‑related areas desirable.

An opportunity to share skills and experience with a young person with similar interests to your own. Be a good role model and demonstrate what a long‑lasting positive relationship looks like. Have the opportunity to try new activities with the young person. Expenses reimbursed up to an agreed limit. Full support is given by the Independent Visitor Coordinator.
2 years minimum with visits taking place once a month for a few hours, arranged by the volunteer and young person to suit you both. Ability required to complete report paperwork and claim forms after each visit.
