Job Description

Job Title: PSV Company Bus Driver

Location: Unit A Bracebridge Street

The HATS Group is the UK's foremost private healthcare provider, excelling in patient‑centric transport services with an 'Outstanding' rating for Responsiveness from the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC was established under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as an independent regulator. The CQC is responsible for the registration, inspection and monitoring of health and social care providers. HATS Group is a provider of private ambulances, and this activity is regulated by the CQC.

HATS Group is also regulated by Local Authorities for services delivered under SEND. We are recognised for professionalism, excellence, and operate a fleet of over 800 vehicles, supporting various public and private healthcare institutions and delivering over 2,000,000 passenger movements annually.

Job Purpose

A PSV Company bus driver is responsible for driving a passenger‑carrying vehicle (PCV) and providing good customer service and a safe and comfortable journey throughout the network of HATS buses.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure safety and wellbeing of clients throughout the journey and handover.
  • Ensure that the high‑visibility PPE is always worn in vehicle movement areas.
  • Observe speed limits within bus depots and school premises.
  • Check the condition of the vehicle prior to commencing service: carrying out the safety walk‑round check, reporting defects to the right person, completing the Vehicle Defect Card or entering defects on the electronic ticket machine (depending on location), and ensuring the vehicle is clean and tidy before service.
  • Comply with laws and company regulations regarding mobile phone use, smoking in company vehicles, and the use of prohibited equipment (e.g., gaming consoles) while on duty.
  • Be responsible for health, safety, security, welfare, environmental and fire safety arrangements for yourself, customers, and colleagues, and attend safety briefings and training as required.
    • Report all safety accidents/incidents using the company’s reporting procedure.
    • Understand emergency and evacuation plans.
    • Keep the bus cab area safe and tidy.
    • Provide a high standard of customer service.
    • Provide information to customers about road closures and diversions.
    • Behave in a friendly and professional manner towards customers and colleagues.
    • Assist with the additional needs of children, vulnerable adults, the elderly, infirm or disabled.
    • Drive the company’s vehicles safely, legally, and professionally.
    • Maintain the timetable, avoiding early or late departure when it is safe to do so.
    • Stay updated with road closures, diversions or special events that may affect the service (read notices, attend briefings, listen to supervisor instructions).
    • Hold a valid driving licence and CPC licence at all times, available for inspection by staff.
  • Ensure driver’s licence has a D1 category with no restrictions and that the CPC licence is valid for the vehicle type being driven.
  • Maintain licence medical renewals up to date.
  • Communicate any licence changes affecting entitlement to drive to the line manager (e.g., sickness, injury or conviction).
  • Make licence available for inspection every 6 months.
  • Report for work at the correct time and location with the correct equipment.
  • Always observe the company dress code while on duty.
  • Do not report for work when overtired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Notify line manager of absence following relevant notification procedures.
  • Report safety, security, driving and customer‑service incidents to the line manager as soon as possible.
  • Report all incidents on the road likely to affect the service as soon as it is safe to do so (e.g., road closures, accidents, emergencies, highway repairs).
  • Take part in a yearly appraisal.
  • Provide feedback to line manager on how services can be improved.
  • Ensure adherence to all HATS policies and procedures.
  • Undertake any reasonable request made by the company.
  • Participate in flexible working hours with core hours 07:00–09:00 and 14:30–16:30; undertake additional work as the service requires.
