Qualifications

Skills for Security are the leading provider of apprenticeships to the Fire and Security sector.

We’re on the lookout for a passionate Functional Skills Tutor to join our dedicated team and help learners build the confidence and skills they need to succeed – in work, study, and everyday life.

Location of Role: This role is home‑based and can be based anywhere in the UK. There will be a requirement to attend your local training centre on a regular basis. There will be some occasional travel to other centres as required. Training centres are located in: Warrington, Watford, Dagenham and Walsall therefore we invite applications from candidates living within commutable distance to at least one of these locations.

What You'll Do:

As a Functional Skills Tutor, you'll deliver engaging and tailored sessions in English and mathematics (Level 1 and 2) to apprenticeship learners who require these qualifications as part of their programme. Using outcomes from initial and diagnostic assessments, you’ll create individual learning plans, support progress through mock assessments, and help learners prepare for success in their final assessments.

You’ll teach through a mix of classroom sessions, remote learning, and embedded delivery – making learning accessible, motivating and meaningful.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths at Levels 1 & 2
  • Create engaging, differentiated learning materials
  • Plan and deliver lessons based on initial and diagnostic assessment results
  • Track learner progress and support learners through to successful achievement
  • Administer and invigilate mock and live assessments
  • Maintain accurate learner records and contribute to quality assurance
  • Champion safeguarding and learner wellbeing in all aspects of your work
Person Requirements:
  • A recognised teaching qualification (e.g. AET, Cert Ed, PGCE)
  • A minimum of Level 2 in Functional Skills or GCSE (C/4 or above) in English and maths
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills in an apprenticeship or training provider setting
  • A learner‑centred, supportive approach to teaching
  • Strong communication, planning and organisational skills
  • An understanding of safeguarding, Prevent and working with diverse learner needs
  • Tech‑savvy with the ability to hit the ground running
