Role description

As part of a growing and agile Environmental Planning team, we’re looking for a Principal/Associate Technical Director with a strong track record in leading environmental and consenting aspects of Design and Build projects. Your role will involve protected species, pollution, surface water, materials management, air quality, and noise in some of the world’s busiest and most beautiful locations.

Responsibilities
  • Work on diverse projects including large‑scale energy, infrastructure, rail, highways, water, mixed‑use developments, public realm and masterplanning, as well as smaller agile projects.
  • Drive technical excellence, promote a flexible and collaborative environment supported by digital innovation.
  • Lead the coordination and delivery of planning and environmental work for multidisciplinary teams, achieving optimal outcomes within the D&B process.
  • Build business development opportunities, create and deliver projects to expand our portfolio in the D&B sector, collaborating closely with upstream environmental and planning work.
  • Raise awareness of our services, win new opportunities, and build contacts.
  • Engage key client relationships, create cross‑selling opportunities, and lead by example.
  • Engage with consultees and stakeholders.
  • Manage projects, ensuring technical, quality, commercial, health and safety performance.
  • Collaborate with Arcadis colleagues across our global business.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Excellent knowledge of environmental and consenting processes, including EIA practices, procedures, case law, and environmental sustainability principles.
  • Strong experience with contractors and influence sustainability through design.
  • Experience across a range of project types.
  • Strong report writing, verbal and presentation skills, with ability to review work of others to ensure quality.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary coordination and leadership, with solid project management and technical skills.
  • Experience consulting and negotiating with planning authorities, regulators, and stakeholders.
  • Commercial expertise, including forecasting, project management, and quality assurance.
  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification, preferably chartered or working toward chartered status.
  • A flexible, pragmatic, collaborative approach to work.
