Location: Portsmouth
Salary: £480–£530 per week (term time only)
Contract: Full-time, Monday to Friday
Start Date: Immediate / Rolling start dates available

Step Into Teaching are working with a forward-thinkingAlternative Provision (AP) secondary school in Portsmouth, offering an exciting opportunity for graduates to gain first-hand classroom experience supporting students who may face social, emotional, or behavioural challenges.

This role is ideal for graduates considering a career in teaching, psychology, youth work, or educational support, and looking to build valuable experience through our Graduate Experience Programme.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Alternative Provision setting, you will:

• Support students aged 11–16 who may have struggled in mainstream education.
• Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams to deliver engaging and inclusive learning experiences.
• Provide one-to-one and small group support to help students re-engage with education and achieve their personal and academic goals.
• Assist in behaviour management and emotional regulation strategies.
• Model positive behaviour, resilience, and empathy to inspire trust and motivation.
• Help create a safe, calm, and supportive learning environment for all learners.

• Resilient, patient, and emotionally intelligent.
• Able to build strong, positive relationships with students and staff.
• Interested in education, psychology, youth work, or social care.
• Confident communicators with a proactive and adaptable attitude.

Experience working with young people (in schools, youth settings, camps, or mentoring) is desirable but not essential.
