Main duties of the job
As Inpatient Midwife Team Leader, you will:
- Provide advanced and compassionate midwifery care and ensure prescribing for women with diabetes in pregnancy, ensuring timely assessments, follow‑up and evidence‑based care planning.
- Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary postnatal services, working closely with consultants, neonatologist, specialist support workers, perinatal mental health team, and senior management team.
- Offer expert advice, education and support to colleagues across maternity, primary care and the wider trust, ensuring best practice is shared and implemented.
- Line manage and appraise team members, supporting their development and ensuring service resilience.
- Champion patient education, empowering women and families to understand and manage their condition throughout pregnancy and beyond.
- Take an active role in governance, clinical audit, complaints investigation, and implementation of national initiatives such as the Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle.
- Contribute to service development, research and quality improvement to enhance outcomes and patient experience.
- Promote a culture of safety, compassion and inclusivity, ensuring women's voices and experiences are at the heart of service delivery.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications
- Registered midwife
- Recognised leadership training or equivalent experience
- MSc qualification or working towards a master's degree.
Experience
- Demonstrates excellent clinical skills with a commitment to family‑centred care.
- Awareness and application of research‑based practice.
- Proven managerial experience across all areas of midwifery care, including recruitment, development, and performance management.
- Experience in prioritising workloads, working on own initiative, and managing team workloads effectively.
- Understanding and engagement with clinical governance and quality issues (e.g., benchmarking).
- Experience in developing mechanisms for financial control and cost‑effectiveness.
Skills and Abilities
- Sound knowledge of current midwifery issues and their local and national relevance.
- In‑depth understanding of safeguarding, including the provision of staff support.
- Strong skills in organisation, conflict resolution and negotiation, and complex problem‑solving.
- Demonstrates the ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions.
Communication
- Acts as a key communication resource within the multidisciplinary team, ensuring effective information sharing and collaboration.
- Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal and non‑verbal communication skills.
- Excellent IT skills with experience using Microsoft Office Software (Excel, MS Teams, Word etc).

- Provides supervision and support to staff, fostering a psychologically safe and inclusive working environment.
