Teacher of History

Start Date: September 2026

Tenure: Permanent, full time/ part time (minimum 3 days per week)

Salary: Competitive – based on the Surbiton High School Pay Scale

Surbiton High School is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and inspiring Teacher of History to join our large, dynamic and highly successful department. This role offers an excellent opportunity for a talented teacher—at any stage of their career—to contribute to an ambitious and vibrant school community.

About the Department

The History Department is well-established team of 4 teachers teaching History at all key stages with some members of the department teaching Politics at A-level. We have an excellent record of academic success at GCSE and at A-level. We regularly have students apply for History and related courses at Oxbridge and enjoy mentoring these students to help ensure success. All students study History in Year 7, 8 and 9. Over 60% of the year group opt to take History GCSE. Both History and Politics are popular A-level subjects.

The History department have run numerous trips to inspire pupils. These include Hampton Court Palace, a battlefields trip, the Imperial War Museum, Berlin and many others. All department members contribute to the rich offering of extra opportunities we afford our pupils.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Teacher of History, you will:

  • Plan and deliver stimulating lessons that encourage critical thinking, curiosity and independence
  • Create a classroom climate where all pupils feel valued, supported and challenged
  • Demonstrate excellent subject knowledge and pedagogical practice
  • Monitor pupil progress closely and apply effective intervention strategies when needed
  • Contribute to the department’s enrichment, trips and broader co‑curricular programme
  • Support pupils pastorally as a Form Tutor or Deputy Form Tutor
  • Uphold the school’s values, behaviour standards and safeguarding requirements
  • Take an active role in departmental development and CPD
  • Teach A‑level History, which is essential for this post
  • Teach A‑level Politics if desired (advantageous but not essential)
Who We’re Looking For

Whether you are an experienced teacher or at the beginning of your career, you are likely to be someone who:

  • Holds a good Honours degree (QTS preferred but not essential)
  • Brings strong, secure subject knowledge and a genuine passion for History
  • Can deliver inspiring lessons across KS3, GCSE and A‑level
  • Communicates clearly, sensitively and professionally with pupils, colleagues and parents
  • Demonstrates strong organisational and ICT skills
  • Is a reflective practitioner who enjoys working collaboratively
  • Builds positive relationships with warmth, integrity and enthusiasm
  • Maintains high expectations for pupil progress, behaviour and engagement
  • Shows initiative, attention to detail, and a flexible approach
  • Is committed to ongoing professional development and open to learning
